I've searched for a couple of hours now, and haven't found a solution. I've updated Nero 6 and the firmware for my brand new Plextor PX-760A. I had a couple of successful burns with DVD+R and one successful burn with DVD+R DL, but after updating the drives firmware I've had nothing but problems. Had problems with DMA being mysteriously disabled, but I've enabled it. Now I can burn CDs OK, but DVDs always fail, usually with nothing having been written to the disk. Here's a copy of the latest log. Please help!

In this log I see you are burning DLs (good ones though, they are Verbatim).

    However,
You're burning far too fast for DL. Burn @ 2.4x and also for DL media I use IMGBurn. It handles the layer break better and is simpler for DLs than Nero. It's free off Google.

    Also you have INcd installed.
Save your serial number and run these tools...

    1. http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/General_CleanTool.html
    then
    2. ftp://ftp6.nero.com/tools/General-CleanTool.zip

    Then reinstall these

    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

    Use your serial when prompted.

    Get back to me.

More good info. thanks. I had wondered about that "?.?.?.?" bit in the log, but had read somewhere that XP doesn't need this dll. I'm very curious about why there would be an identically-named (but presumably different) dll in the Nero directory. Wouldn't that be considered a bad programming practice?

I don't know why Nero uses its own too. But anyway, it's your windows aspi that is wrong not Nero.

    Still no love.
Ripper, the links to the update files in your post take me to Nero's update page index, not to a specific file download. I can't find the files you refer to:
    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

I did run the clean utility, then I tried to run the latest Nero 6 updater (nero-6.6.1.4_no_yt.exe) but that wouldn't start until I re-installed Nero from my original CD. I didn't re-install InCD.

I updated the Windows ASPI layer with the utility from Adaptec.

I still can't burn any DVD... single or double layer. I can burn CDs OK. I'm starting to think my drive broken. Here's the latest log... trying to burn a single-layer DVD.

I can see a few things wrong still...

Your DMA has slipped off. Put it back on with this guide...
    http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues

Now, the error you pointed out (well done BTW), is related to this.

That media, CMC MAG, is horrible, some of the worst available. Try brands like Verbatim or Sony.

Also your burning @ 16x. Burn @ 8x for now.

    Get back to me. :)

I noticed the DMA thing right after I posted this. This is the 3rd time I've had to re-enable it. In order to do that I had to delete the DVD-R drive in Device Mangler and then let Windows re-detect it. So now I've successfully burned a single-layer DVD again (the cheap TDK media seems to work OK). Then I tried a dual-layer data disk. The burn seemed to go OK, and Nero reported that it was burned successfully. But I can't read the disk. Windows reports that it is not formatted correctly or is corrupt. Plextools doesn't even seem to see it. Aargh.

Try using IMGBurn to burn your DLs with. Make an ISO of the files first, then burn it with IMGBurn.

Just to confirm that it was a problem with the drive itself. I returned it to Plextor for a replacement, and I'm having no problems with the new drive.
