I cannot install any other software on my system,since I installed linxus on my hard drive. I would like to install other software like nero, card making other games, my digtal camera software and I would like to put things in different folders but I cannot make different folders the software will not let me. When I put other software in my drive to install it tells me(couldn't display"/media/cdron/setup) what this crap. Please if anyone can help I wouldreally appreicate it thanks. Stillbles
that's because a lot of software isn't "compatible" with linux. You'll need to download specialised versions of it.
Some versions of Linux come bundled with Windows emulation software. I think Knoppix and Xandros both do.
@ rcrockett : if you mean WINE then a few things things come to mind : 1) Wine Is Not an Emulator *hence the name* 2) Why would knoppix have wine ? as wine is of no use if not running from a HD. 3) Wine has limited support for software, so it is by no means a good solution. One would be better off getting the linux dependencies for the software than trying to run windows software on linux.
I was referring to CrossOver Office, not WINE. WINE isn't an emulator of course, but thought the wording appropriate to help stillbles understand what it is. And yes, one should always find Linux compatible software before anything. Stillbles, what flavor and version of Linux are you running? Knoppix DVD comes bundles with an ass load of good software, if you want to check that out. http://www.knopper.net
Crossover office is something i wouldn't advise to anyone, as i feel payed software + linux = BAAAAD. Not to mention it's now called crossover linux, and being sold as a complete distro, no longer a seperate program. But it is indeed an alternative.
Poor guy..lots of advice but not a lot of help. Maybe I can fire some practical linux 101 in here..?? First off..a lot of cameras and webcams only have winblows compatable software. A really good google search may come up with some open source equivalent, or you might get really lucky and the makers have realised there is a small but significant market out there (canon...NOT) Otherwise the best advice I can offer is this.. Go for a really modern linux distro, something like dreamlinux.. may not seem the best but has fantastic usb capabilities. Before you install it get the windows system and system32 folders backed up off yopur existing windows installation.. Install your linux .. Then slap wine in on the top and add your system and system32 dll-hell folders into the fake windows area that wine makes. Then try to install your software for whatever device it is. You will learn a hell of a lot about linux in a very short time trying to get usb or any external equipment working in wine....all I can do about that is wish you luck and remind you that google is your friend. Somebody out there will have either succeded or failed to do exactly what you are trying. My time off has made me a nice person again... welcome to the wonderful world of free open-source software..go for it and never look back..
