I recently bought a 500 gig external hard drive and am having problems with archived files. I have tried multiple formats (.rar, .zip, .7z) and they all become corrupt as soon as they hit the hard drive. If the archive is on my internal drive and I extract it to the external drive, there is no problem. However, if the archive is copied to the external and then back to the internal, it is corrupted. The corruption gets worse for particular files as well. On the first try, 3 or 4 files will be corrupt and on the second 10 will.

I cannot pinpoint the issue. I have tried two 500 gig external drives (Western Digital and Maxtor), two file systems (WD was FAT32, Maxtor is NTFS), two different compression/extraction programs (Winrar and 7z), two computers (Dell desktop, Gateway laptop), and I have tried both downloaded archive files and ones I have created myself. My year old Maxtor 200 gig has never had these problems.

Is there just some issue with archives and large external hard drives?

    Thanks

Have you tried to partition the drive and try it? Could be due to cluster size, etc. of the large single disc. Just a thought, but worth a shot.
