    Hi guys,

I am new to Dual Layer burning and these are my experiences so far:

I am okay with single layer burning using nero 6.3? and with dvd shrink using dvd+r media. All sucessfull now I have got into it, very few coasters, working on my two home DVD players (standalone) and with my 3in1 tv/vcr/dvd.

With Dual Layer, I got some Ri Disc printable media, just for a trial really. Cosat about £1.20 a disk but I know I can get htem cheaper in bulk if they are working okay.

First attempt was to use nero to do a copy from the factory movie to the DL media using one drive. Copied to the HDD first just with drag and drop, then tried to burn using DVD Files in Nero. No joy.

Tried then to use Nero Recode to put on the DL media and it worked. Not sure if layer break is any good but can move through disc okay. Plays on both standalone playrs but not the 3in1 TV.

Tried to run a copy on the fly of another disc to same brand DL media, the result is it only plays on one standalone DVD player and not the 3in1 TV.

Tried IMG BURN to copy from disc to disc on the fly and same result.

Is there a easy/quick way to do these back ups or is it bad media perhaps.

Why did one work but not another on the 2 standalone players?

    Cheers for any feedback guys.

    Richard

Nero is very good burning software, but not the best to burn DL discs with. I use DVD Decrypter to burn DL discs, with AnyDVD running in the background.

A lot of folks use IMGBurn to burn DL discs, but I've never been able to get IMGBurn to work for anything.

Your biggest problem is probably the media you're using. The DL media, with the least amount of problems, is Verbatim DL media. Try them.
    Good luck!

right then, I have just been to local store to get some media. No verbatim but in the meantime they did have what they claim to be 'very popular and very good'. Aone DVD+R DL 8x.

These were the cheapest though so suprised if they would try to get rid of them as being good if they are not, would make more sense to sell me the dear stuff.

Anyway, I have sourced DVD Decryptor too and will give them a go and see what happens.

Is there a really special technique or just simply copy to PC then back to teh DL Media using ISO read/wrtie which is what is always being suggested?

Hopefully I may have fallen on soething that just works.

Still not sure why one of the discs burnt last night works on more players though? that was the one that I copied to PC DRAG AND DROP style, then burnt through Nero recode.

    Appreciate you help mate.

    yes, just that.

For media, it sounds like you went from bad to worse. [bold]Don't buy media because it's cheap![/bold] You get what you pay for, most of the time. I don't know where you are, but Wal Mart usually has a 3pk. of the Verbatim DL's, unless sold out.

If it doesn't work with DVD Decrypter, download the 21 day free trial of AnyDVD and install it. Once installed, you don't [bold]do[/bold] anything with it. It works in the background. Make sure you have a Red Fox head icon, in system tray, in bottom right corner. If it's grey, right click on it, and click on Enable AnyDVD. Then try DVD Decrypter again. AnyDVD is for bypassing the copy protection, which Decrypter can't do, with newer movies. Get AnyDVD here:

    Good luck!

As far as what I've found for DL burning is Verbatims either using ANY DVD with Clone DVD or Img burn they seem for me to set up the best layer breaks and quality. Chris

The media should be +R DL, that's your best bet for movies. Use -R for DATA.

You didn't mention the age or type of your burner. Many of the older DL burners aren't up to the task especially with new media. If you can booktype/bitset to DVD-ROM (+R only) you also increase your compatabilty chances, this is one of the advantages of newer burners. But no matter what you do you may never get discs that play in all your players.

Thank you for all your feedback guys.

    I have had success! YYYEEEAAA!

The media seems to be okay, it is AONE but the disc seems to be RICOH Dye if that is correct?

It is DVD +R DL, 8 Speed discs but I think my recorder is only 2.4 so that is good, I understnad this is the best way to get error free dual layer recordings?

Anyway, with a combination of my media and the NEC 3540 writer, using DVD Decryptor and ANY DVD running in the back ground, I successfully 'backed up' two dvd-9 discs.

I set the DVD Decyptor to ISO read then ISO write with the book setting to DVD ROM and not only does the resulting disc play in the two cheap and cheerfull dvd players, but also in the ever picky 3 in 1 TV/VCR/DVD.

Now a question, does this mean that I should set all burnt media to DVD ROM or just carry on as I am and do it only for my dual layer burns?

I am using Nero and DVD Shrink for other copies etc and on my single layer everything seems to be fine so far!

ALSO - Is there a way to take a file from a DVD-9 that has been dragged/dropped to a PC and then add the MDS file? I see that when the ISO Read is done, you get a RAR file with the normal DVD files inside and a seperate MDS file.

The question really is - If I have a video_ts file on my desktop that has been drag/dropped from a 8gb factory DVD, can I somehow create a dual layer dvd on my media and with what program?

Cheers in advance again from a very happy DUAL LAYER burning afterdawn fan!

    thanks for that.

I have Image Burn software too.

the question I need answering really is how do I get around this:
I have not got the original disc any more, but have dragged and dropped the video_ts folder to my hard drive so can not now use ISO read then write to burn a disc properly.

How do I get the Video_TS file onto a dual layer disc without shrinking it down.

I would normally now use the ISO read and write but I understnad that is only possible when you actually have the original disc?

    Cheers

    Richard

When you put decrypter in write mode, you'll see "Please select a file", under "Source", near top of Decrypter's window. Choose the file you want to burn, and click the "Write" button, between the HD icon and dvd disc icon. If it won't burn the type file you wanted, you can get a 21 day free trial of CloneDVD, from the same page you got AnyDVD. That should do it. Try IMGBurn again too. I know you said in your first post, that it didn't work, but the source is different, and worth a try.
    Good luck!

Also Nero vision will pick up the TS file and put it to the double layer. Chris

trying again using IMG BURN and following the instructions to the letter.

to clarify, I am trying to burn a full factory DVD that has been copied to the Hard Drive with simple drag and drop.

I have selected the Video_TS file from my hard drive as source and the destination as the DVD+RDL, selecting that is make this a DVD ROM in book type.

fingers crossed but suspiciously I am not hopefull :(

If this fails again, what info is needed to pin point the problem?

    Let you know the result.

What size is the file your copying? If it's a full movie you'll probably have to compress some through Clone DVD etc. Chris

Damn and Blast (to say the least!)

Okay, so it got to 35% of the burn, this is for a 6ish gb file in total with the layer break set in IMG burn not at 50/50 but about 60/40, this was the best option suggested by IMG BURN

So it gets to what I assume is the layer break and then the device buffer drops to 4%

    Cheers for reply chris

    file is 5.69gb

Appreciate I could and probably normally would put this through DVD Shrink to get it on a SL disc but on principal, want to find a solution.

This is a VIDEO_TS file on my hard drive that I want to put onto DVD+R DL, I am successfull in copying using ISO read and tehn ISO write now but want solution to the large DVD file I have on my hard drive.

appreciate any ponters you have mate.

From the ImgBurn forums they would say try other media.

    http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1872

Seeing as you had success with this media, run the files through DVDShrink and resave them (no compression) just to see if Shrink errors out. Shrink is picky when it comes to DVD compliance. Maybe there is a problem with the files.

Okay, tried updated NERO 6.1.17 or whatever to the latest for my disc which is 6.6

this gave me an option at the bottom for single or dual layer disc and also for book type.

Set these as dual layer and DVD ROM and then copied the VIDEO_TS folder into the usual place.

RESULT = Doesnt play on the majority of DVD players I have.

Infact - no better than doing a DVD-DVD Copy in Nero without touching the hard drive.

Dont have Clone DVD2 but can't see anything really working properly for what I need.

In the future i will be okay to ISO Read/Write through DVD Decryptor but the ones on my Hard Drive are basically going to have to be shrunk to single layer DVD+R the old way.

Unless nayone has any other ideas that is?

Clone DVD 2 has a free 21 day trial with the time wrapped up so far I'd give that a shot. But I agree with MysticE it's more likely going to come down to the media.Chris
