I have a 40gb hard drive but when i look in my computer to see the size it says there is only 38.2gb

    I bought a pc 6 months ago it has a 40gb hard drive in it but when i check the size of the drive in my computer it says there is only 38.2gb why is that.What happened to the other 1.8gb of my c drive can anyone help with this issue

    do a properties on the drive & you'll see 2 sets of numbers of which 1 will show correct 40gig but both is right

    its the OS it "secertly" makes a drive for files which you cant see if ur usin XP then it takes up that room for things which few ppl know

    rudsta816, it is the size of the kilobytes as they are not 1000 bytes but 1024 bytes, so start adding them up.

    i know they are 1024 but the OS does take up space that the computer cannot allocate for cause ive had 2 hard drives in 1 with xp the other with a linux just for fun thats how i found out cause the linix said 40gigs for my xp HD just as the HD said on its cover
