I have seen several posts on why it is not advised to burn the full capacity of the disc.If true ,Can somebody tell me if there is documented proof to this fact?...

i personally always stick to the 4300mb limit, others are more 'brave', using (for instance) 4400mb and different amounts etc etc. i like 4300mb so my fat fingers don't damage the edge of the discs :)

I agree with Creaky on the 4300mb rule. But some will say if they are good quality media TY's/Verbs then most likely you are safe to burn to the edge.

I have never seen much documentation on the matter myself. But I do see allot of members suggesting the 4300mb rule. I had this problem when I first started out.

Where the DVD played fine at the beginning but when you got closer to the outer edge it started pixilating. It was suggested to me to do the 4300mb and it worked for me. Even after coming to my senses and started using TY's I have stuck with the 4300mb rule.

So there must be some truth in the matter if allot of members give that advice out. No documentation needed for me to use the advice that members give me. What better way to learn then to read and follow what has worked for others.

    - doh!, i knew i'd forgotten to mention something; i too only use top notch media but i still stick to 4300mb out of habit, in my humble opinion i'm not bothered about losing a measly 100mb

I find Shrink's 4464 to be fine. Looking at Nero logs they list the last writeable address as 4489MB for -R and 4482MB for +R.

If I'm paying for good media I expect it to work correctly.

@Mystic..... you're absolutely correct...... I too burn close to the edge using Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims (4464) this is a 4.38GB space.... but I am weary of the future if something will start to go wrong.... I used to burn only to 4300 but then when DVDRebuilder makes the disks to the 4.38 marker......thank G-d I use good media!

I use DVD rebuilder but have the sector size set to burn around 4300 to 4350MB in DVD Rebuilder.

I would rather be safe then sorry when it comes to burning the disc and it going to close to the edge even with TY I use.

well Larry.... I've been doing this for a while now..... and it's never a problem with the TYs or Verbs.... and it's debatable because many members have different opinions on this as well as burning speeds. but I guess the proof is in the pudding...... and so far soooooooo good. All my media works in every player that I feed it to..... that's 4 different makes and models (mine and friends). I can't complain and I'll keep doing what works for me.

I totally agree with you IHoe everyone has their own preference and I am not saying your preference is wrong.

I manly put in the sector size comment in case someone else uses DVD-RB and might not know that you can custom size the output size.

Any member thats been around a while knows that your way(My Way) isn't the only way. There are so many different programs out there to choose from. Plus so many different tips and tricks that some use and some don't.

That is really what it comes down to. Is your own personal preference. Which might not be the preference of the next member.

But I think it is good that we have these types of discussions so a newer member can learn from all members and maybe take a little here and a little there and find their own way to make backups.

@ Larry..... it's not that I wanted to bring out the differences..... it's just that things are sooooo debatable. just like the debate about compatibility or quality when it comes to blank media. I use DigitalFAQ's media guide: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

now there are some members who disagree with this guide. My only discrepancy with it is TDK media .... I don't believe it's first class media! Anyway..... how do you judge blank media..... by compatibility or quality..... and some members pointed out that they (DigitalFAQ)judges media by compatibility and not manufacturing quality. the stamp that they put on the media is read by the burner and manufactures put writing strategies on the burner that reads each stamp on the disk.... so the stamp is very important. If the manufactures of the burner reads the certain stamps more easily because the manufacturers incorporate writing strategies for those disk more than other disks!!! soooooo therefore the disk is more compatible with more burners than other disks. AKA... quality disks!!!! soooooo basically we are looking for the better disks that have more of a chance to be compatible to most DVD Burners!!! And we consider this QUALITY. When in fact some member (JoeRyan) who pointed this debate out showed me that the media guide is more about compatibility than quality because..... guess what...... CMC MAGs uses (or owns) the same Taiwan factory that produces Verbatims! And yet many members claim that Memorex is crap (which code out to CMC MAG)---- and they own the factory that produces VERBATIM!

why I brought this up, because everything is debatable! I didn't mean to drag or ramble on about stuff but EVERYTHING IS UP TO PREFERENCES. Use what works for you!

I have had the debate as well with JoeRyan when it came to the Digital FAQ guide.

I understand what he says when he talks about compatibility. But what difference does it make if you use the terminology of (Compatibility) or (Quality) I mean in my opinion it is pretty much the same point that we are trying to get across.

I guess I use the word quality due to other members used that terminology when I started off backing up media. So I guess I teach what I have learned and use the terminology that was taught to me.

With the Digital FAQ guide I look at it as quality due to the definitions they have made for the different class media. They give you percentage success rates for each class and you have a better percentage chance of having a successful burn with 1st class media. The better percentage rate might be due to better compatibility but I would assume the more compatible DVD Media is the better quality it is.

    As to the below
This is true for allot of merchandise we buy. Not just media. Allot of the off brand food or off brand electronics we buy are actually made and produced in the same factory and owned by the same companies. But they also cost less because they are made cheaper. So the quality is not to the standard to have the NAME BRAND on it.

I am not saying Memorex is an off brand name I know it isn't, but the standard of compatibility doesn't seem to be up there with Verbs or TY's. If they where then they would have the same price tag as the top notch media.

There are allot of great members on this site that have allot to offer. Different ways of teaching and different programs and techniques they use.

Just a month or so ago I used to tell members to use ISOBuster to extract ISO images. I can not remember who but someone said why don't you use WinRAR to do it. Ever since then I have been using WinRAR to extract my ISO files and have passed on that information on to others.

That is what makes forums like this great to be apart of. You can be a veteran of backing up DVDs and still learn from others or easier ways to do things.
