Formatting your computer is not always the answer. Your OS may be repaired 99.9% of the time. The first thing that you need to do is check your device manager and make sure that you have drivers installed for the USB ports.

You can also tell them to update drivers if they appear to be working. Now if it is just the USB modem that is not responding then maybe try hitting the reset button on it. If it does not have a reset button, then unplug it and unplug the USB cable. Turn your computer off and then back on twice. The second time the computer comes on hook up your modem and plug the USB back in. You should see that your OS notices new hardware. It should start working again.

Sometimes people want to know why I tell them to turn off their computer twice. Your OS remembers your last settings when it shuts down.

Well, why did your computer turn off while you were downloading? Was there a short or a power outage? Is your computer connected to a surge protector? Did you unplug a device while it was running on the system?

Things like this can cause faults in the motherboard and devices attached to them. Do you have USB ports in the front and the back of the machine? If you do have them in the front and the back, are any of them working?

Give me a little better description of the exact problem that you are facing, and the steps that you have tried to correct the problem. This will give me a little guidance to start troubleshooting the problem at hand.

hay there is 3 usb in front and 4 in back i was downloading through utorrent and my computer just went off when it went back on nothing connected to the usb worked but they had electricity going through them because the usb modems light was on.
My computer is pluged straight into the electricty and i think it turned off because my isp telecom had a outage.
I went to device manager and disable and uninstalled the usb ports and when i press search for new devices it finds the ports and installs then and it says working fine (this is when i sore the little talkbox come up and say new hardware found I thought i got it but i didnt) thx again bro

Okay, since the machine said that it found new hardware, then the ports are working, or should be working. Try unplugging the USB items from the ports, doing an uninstall on the items from the device manager, then restarting your machine. Then do a complete reinstall of the items. You can try this on just one item at first to make sure that it works. If it doesn't then give me the name and serial of the item so I can research the problem.

    Thanks!

No don't open the computer up. Let me think about this a little bit.

If you put a device on the USB port does the computer recognize that a new hardware?
