Could someone please direct me to a free software that can join VOB's together. I think its called muxing, but i'm not sure i'm a newb.

i have a couple of vob's because i use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode

- I dont mind having 1 big VOB
- Or 1 other big video format file

Muxing is taking a video only file (e.g. m2v) and an audio only file (e.g. mp2, AC3) and merging them together into one audio/video file (e.g. mpg2, VOB). VOB files already contain both audio and video so combining different VOB files together wouldn't be muxing.

It depends upon what you're trying to end up with. Do you want one single audio/video file (mpeg, VOB) from your separate VOB files, or do you want to burn a new DVD from your VOB files?

If you want to burn a DVD from just your VOB files then I think the easiest thing is to use 1-click software like NeroVision Express. Drag and drop your VOB files into Nerovision and then burn a new DVD.

If you don't have Nerovision Express you could also use free software like VOBedit and IFOEdit to author a new DVD from only VOB files. Here's a guide for that:

If you just want one single file ripped from your DVD then tell DVD Decrypter not to break it out into separate files. Use DVD Decrypter in File mode, then Tools, Settings, File mode, and change File Splitting to None. Then you'll have one VOB file from the DVD.

If you only have the separate VOB files that Decrypter ripped and you just want to combine them into one file then you could do that at a DOS prompt.

Start, Run, Cmd (this opens a DOS window)
cd \Videofiles ("Videofiles" is the folder where Decrypter saved your VOB files)
copy /b vts_01_1.vob + vts_01_2.vob + vts_01_3.vob + vts_01_4.vob new.vob

new.vob is now 1 VOB file of the movie.

Moonrocks, thanks for the advice. I have tried everything I know to make DVD Decrypter to make just one VOB file of the DVD, but have been unable to duplicate the task. I did it yesterday and today I tried to do it with another DVD and could not. I uninstalled Nero and reinstalled DVD Decrypter and I tried DVD Shrink with the same results...several files instead of just one. I knew that you could merge files at the DOS prompt from many years ago, but did not remember the command and the parameter to use. I followed your directions and it worked great. I just wish I knew what is causing DVD Decrypter to continue to split into several files. Thanks a lot for your info.

If your file system is NTFS (not FAT32) then I can't see why DVD Decrypter (File mode, file splitting turned off) wouldn't create 1 large VOB file.

If you were using Ripit4me with DVD Decrypter I've heard Ripit4me will change some of Decyrpter's settings, including file splitting. But if you're using Decrypter all by itself you should be able to rip just 1 large VOB file.

Yes my system is using NTFS drives and I did use Ripit4me in an attempt to get this problem solved. Since, I have uninstalled DVD Decrypter and reinstalled it just in case RitIt4me made some changes to DVD Decrypter but the results again are the same. It must be something I am missing.

Well, if you're writing to an NTFS drive, and using Decrypter by itself, in file mode, with file splitting set to none, but you're still getting the VOB files split... then I don't know what's going on.

Why don't you post the first part of your Decrypter log, just up to the part where it actually starts copying files.

This is what I get from the DVD Decrypter log. I have also unstalled all the other media convertion programs I have installed for the last two days and cleaned the register to make sure there are no left over registry entries.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, it's the main title that's getting split, yes? Because even with File Splitting set to None Decrypter will create a separate VOB file for each Title (main movie, special features, etc.) on your DVD.

Usually a Main movie takes 3-4 VOB files, from your log I'm wondering if your DVD is 1st half and 2nd half of the movie authored as separate titles onto 1 DVD. Decrypter won't automatically merge separate titles into 1 VOB file.

On your DVD is VTS_02_1.VOB and VTS_02_2.VOB special features or is it the 2nd half of your movie?

This is one of the DVDs that I want to make into one VOB file. Well I tried to insert an image but that did not work. Also, your suggestion to use the copy /b command to merge the files worked for the video but not for the sound on the files. First file had sound, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th did not, then the 5th file had sound and the last, 6th did not. Video wise it had all of it.

If you want to make 1 VOB from those VOB files but the DOS copy command gave you problems that might be if those VOB files were originally encoded differently from each other. If you're just
going to combine VOB files into one file they would all need the audio/video encoded the same.

Virtualdubmod can join VOB files. I've never actually used it for that so I can't vouch for the results. At least you could check the encoding on each VOB file with Virtualdubmod to see if they are the same.

If the VOB files are encoded differently, then you'd need re-encode them before just combining them into 1 file in DOS. There's lots of different software to re-encode.

To make it easy you could use NeroVision Express. It will take VOB files that are encoded differently and re-encode to make them the same and then it will create a full set of DVD files. (There's always some quality loss with re-encoding). At that point you could either join the VOB files in DOS to make 1 VOB, or rip the DVD files that NeroVision created and tell Decrypter to make 1 VOB file.
