I need some help from you. I just got a memorex dvd burner, model that shows on the os is dvd+-ROM 510L V1. I don;t know if this is a crappy burner?? what do you think? i use shrink and nero and with my old burner i was able to check the book type box, but now the box is checked and shaded out so i can not change it. When it goes to the burning stage, it does not say that the book type was changed. What am i doing wrong?

    Hi kstepan50
    I don't think you're doing anything wrong.

When the booktype box in Shrink is greyed out it means either the drive doesn't have the booktyping option or you're using a -R disc.

In a quick google I couldn't find who actually made this drive to see if booktyping was an option.

and let me corrcet my first thread. the drive shows up as a DVD-RAM, not a DVD-ROM so the model is a DVD+-RAM 510L V1

Yeah I saw the DVD-Ram googling but still couldn't find the manufacturer. Sounding more likely that this drive probably doesn't booktype.

Why not get a LiteOn? Booktypes right out of the box - no crossflashing or patched firmware required.
Nero will auto booktype all +R's w/ them.
    Great drives too.

    Not a problem kstepan50

If you're in the US check out newegg.com. Here's a bunch of LiteOn's starting at $29 on up.

A bunch of us here at aD have the SHW-160P6S.
Doing well and have done a whole lot of burning on it.

But even the newer 18x or 20x speeds should be good. I have my eye on the 20x too - thinking of replacing my Pioneer with it. I get faster ripping speeds w/ my LiteOns compared to my Pioneer.

The autobooking w/ Nero & Shrink is a plus.

ok so i decided to order the lite-on LH-20A1P. Hopefully it will be here soon, and it came out cheaper than the memorex. The only worry is that the reviews say it is a rather loud drive. I don;t think it will be bad considerinf when i burn movies i burn at slowest poss speed. Thanks alot for your help and i will let you know how the 20x works out.

Yeah I saw that. I have 2 internal LiteOn's that are very quiet. One is almost 3 years & no loud noises:)
I'd be curious on what you find out on it - keep me posted.

I used newegg quite a few times - pretty fast shipping. Placed a order Tuesday afternoon - got 1 item yesterday and the rest will come tomorrow.

Hmmm shows up in mine w/ the LiteOn's.
Dumb questions (sorry) using a +R disc? Pick the new burner under select backup target in Shrink?

What version of Nero are you using?

I am using the DVD+R tayio Yudens and the Nero version is 7.0.8.2 i think. You go off the burning Rom version right? i did the book type thing from the liteon website and checked the box that says to save to eeprom..

Update your Nero - the latest is 7.5.0.9a - this is a new drive on the market so your version may not fully recognize it. That might be the problem w/ Shrink/Nero.

I only use LiteOn's booktype utility when I burn w/ CloneDVD.
    Nero autobooktypes w/ LiteOn's anytime I use +R media.

If you have DVDDecrypter, you can set the booktype on the Litey with it. Open the program and select your drive then>Tools>Drive>changeBooktype>Lite on tab and set it. Then it will booktype itself to DVD-ROM when it writes a +R disc.

EDIT: Get DVD Decrypter free here:

By default - well for the newer versions of Nero at least - the booktype option is set to automatically booktype +R discs to DVD-Rom.

So any time I use Nero or Nero is doing the burning for Shrink with +R discs and a drive that supports booktyping (all LiteOn's do) they are automatically booktyped.

Nothing to change or do - just does it automatically. (hope I'm making sense)

yeah kind of. I will install the new version of nero and see what that does, i will use decrypter to do it until then. Used to use decrypter but just got used to Nero recently i guess. I guess its just going to be trial and error.. thanks for your help. If you have any more suggestions let me know..

PS do you have to do anything to auto set Nero to DVD-Rom?
