how does DVD Shrink work? i mean how does it REALLY work?

how does software like DVD Shrink really work? i don't want source code, i just want to learn more about DVD video and this "transcoding" stuff. what's a good starting point to learn about this subject, should i just pick up an engineering textbook on MPEG-4, or are there other less-painful methods, or other fundamental things that i should learn first? i actually wouldn't mind the pain (i saved some coupons for Tylenol), but i just want to know what's the most efficient way to learn.

...maybe this is the wrong forum for this question, maybe i should bug the software authors instead, eh?

anyway, DVD Shrink is a most wonderful and magical tool :-) (picture a monkey holding a DVD Shrink software box howlering and cracking away at a pile of bones with a black obelisk in the background, it's that wonderful)

You could ask the author himself there but I don't know how much time he has to answer detailed technical questions since he must be perpetually busy rewriting DVD Shrink.
