Hello. You might want to upgarde to version 6.6.0.18, the latest most stable version available of Nero 6. Do not upgrade to version 6.6.1.4, the latest. It's buggy. To change to any version of Nero: - write down the program serial number. - uninstall the current version. - run the appropriate Nero Clean Tool, in this case the Nero 6 Clean Tool http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html - install version 6.6.0.18 from the two links below: Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe There's a newer firmware, version 1.08, available for your burner here: http://www.de.nec.de/software/2339_FW_ND-4550A_108win.zip There are some problems here. The DMA transfer mode is off on your burner and that's not a good thing. The burner is also installed on the same IDE channel as the hard disk, also not a good idea in my opinion. Put the DVD burner on the same IDE channel as your CD burner. If your system isn't using cable select for the drives, you'll need to make sure the drives are jumpered correctly for the master/slave relationship on the bus. It appears the CD burner is currently jumpered as Master and the DVD burner is the Slave, so just recable the DVD burner onto the same cable as the CD burner. It is currently on the same IDE cable as the hard disk. Restart the system after doing so. Then go to Device Manager and view the settings: - Right click on My Computer and select Properties. - Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button. - Expand IDe ATA/ATAPI Controllers. - Double click on the Secondary IDE Channel - Click the Advanced Setting tab - The following settings should be observed Device 0: DMA if available Ultra DMA Mode 2 Device 1: DMA if available Ultra DMA Mode 2 Here's a guide that might help if you get lost: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 If the above settings are observed, retry burning. You may have to switch the Master/Slave relationship if you have problems. Often the DVD burner likes to be the master. To do so, change the jumper settings on the two drives (if not cable select). Let us know if this solves your problem or not. Edit: typos
hi again thanks for the help ive sorted firmware and dma problems used clean tool but when i try to reinstall v6.6.0.18 i get a message "there is a newer version of nero please uninstall" yet when i search even for hidden files no nero files show up . however in add/remove programmes nero 7.exe shows up but i cant uninstall from there as it says cant find the source file or folder. is there a way of finding what nero files are left and removing them? ive run all the clean tools i can find but they don't seem to find anything and i'm at a loss. the clean tools ask me for an installation path but i cant find the files using explorer to specify one!
Did you try the Nero 7 Clean Tool and the General Clean Tool? If those fail, you may need to do a search for Nero and then a search for Ahead to remove parts. It sounds like something got fouled up along the way in the past with an installation or deinstallation. You may in the end have to find an earlier restore point and start there.
tried all that system restore etc still no joy any other ideas? so hacked off with this but thanks very much for trying to help
You could try a registry cleaner but you may need to consider backing up your data, reformatting your HDD, and reinstalling the OS and applications. I keep a virgin copy of my system ghosted to another drive so all I have to do is backup my data, reformat, and copy the ghost image of the OS and apps back to the HDD and restore the data. Doesn't take long at all to do this way. Otherwise, it's a few hours from start to finish.
