I have an LCD tv, that goes up to 1080i. I have the xbox 360 HD add on, I was wandering if it is better to watch HD movies in 720p or 1080i? Thanks in advance
You'd want to set your display at the highest progressive setting that it will go - so the answer is 720p.
I know this thread (below) goes on for a while, but well worth a read, HD NUT seem to know his stuff. Short answer what fargen said "720p". http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395872 M
I agree with Ced. For HD-DVD set your output as close as possible to the source - in this case 1080i - and let your TV do the scaling/deinterlacing. You want the machine - in this case the XBox 360 - to do as little as possible to the source signal from the HD-DVD drive. Let your HDTV do the hard work since it will most likely do a better job than the console.
personally, i don't see why people want 1080i/p. do people enjoy watching film grains? 720p is better than 1080i cause it's progressive. i can't live with interlaced. for games, 720p is also better because 720p allow more detail to the game. otherwise, games look so bland.
Switching from 1080i/p to 720p will not remove film grain. Film grain is present because: 1. That's the way the director wanted it OR 2. It's present in the Master or the Source of the encode. AND - your system is transparent to the source. Anyway we're not talking of games here. The OP specifically asked about HD-DVD and Ced's statement is still correct:
