Ok i got a couple of questions.
1.Will a cd-r/cd-rw cd drive work for copying .avi files to a cd-r.
2.If so then will the cd-r work on my (cd-r compatible DVD player)
3.If .1 and .2 are both yes then hoe do i do it?

    1. Yes you would use a CDRW drive to copy AVI files to a CDR. I dont think you can even find a plain old CD-recorder drive anymore
    2. I assume your movies are all either DivX or XviD make sure your standalone is able to play them in their native AVI format (currently only the KISS players and a new LiteOn player support them). If you want to play them on a generic standalone you will have to encode them to a (S)VCD format (there is a guide somewhere around.... i would link it for you hehe but im on 56K)
    3. Well if your player supports the raw AVI format then just burn it as a straight DataCD... if not, pass the AVi files through somehting like TMPGEnc with either the SVCD or VCD profiles and burn the resulting files as Super VideoCD or VideoCD under Nero.

In this context, "player" refers to your standalone unit.

Furthermore, if you have either a KISS player or pre-ordered the new LiteOn player, then those will support the DivX/XviD AVIs.

As far as a (S)VCD encoder, just click on this word: TMPGEnc _X_X_X_X_X_[small]ASUS A7V8X-X, AMD2500+
    Samsung 1024MB, PC2700
    360GB [3x120GB, 7200, 8MB]
    MSI Starforce, GeForce4 Ti4400 128MB
