Playing DVDs on my computer

When I try to play a DVD on my computer it won't play. Windows Media player just gives me an error. I think I need a new dvd decoder. My DVD-Rom Drive is the Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-105. My Operating System is Windows XP.
