question regarding an old laptop

    I have this laptop that I was trying to rebuild, except when I start it up it says invalid disc and basically just shuts down. Is there something wrong with the hard drive, or can I still format it and attempt to install a new OS. Thanks

    moved to correct forum.
    the drive probably has no os on it so format & load an os onto it. what os are you tring to install & what are the specs of the laptop?
