I just recently started using DVD-RB with QuEnc as my encoder with high quality and 2 pass encoding selected. When I encode it takes about eight and a half hours to encode. Even though i am running on an AMD Sempron 1.8 GHz that seems way too long. Any ideas why it's taking so long?

vtowner 8 hours is a little slow even for a 1.8 GHz Sempron. I doubt that adjusting your DMA settings is going to help a whole lot unless a good portion of that time involves ripping and burning. Check your encode settings and since things are running slow with QueEnc, give HC or another encoder a try. Some other system info would be helpful such as hard disk size and remaining available space, how much memory do you have, and is this a laptop? Also when was the last time you checked your hard disk fragmentation?
I have two hard drives, one that i boot from which is 60GB and another one that is 250GB which has about 170GB free. I have 1GB of memory, and this is not a laptop, it is a desktop PC. It can't be fragmentation because i defrag all the time. I will try another one of the encoders.
Someone suggested earlier that you check your DMA settings, have you done that yet? When I stated that I didn't think that it would help that much in the realm of encoding, it still has the potential to give you some increased speed, especially if you are working across two hard disks. Since you defrag your system often my next question is how much free hard disk space do you have left on the individual disks? It's been a whiles since I've done any encoding on a single CPU system, but if I had to estimate the amount of time that it would take with your current setup, it would be between 3.5/4.5 hours with two pass encodes. Those should be reasonable goals for you to shoot towards. There is always a solution somwhere.
Yes i have checked my DMA settings and for the hard drives there are 45GB free on my 60GB, and there are 139GB free on my 232GB drive.
Sounds like free hard drive space. DMA is settings on your CD/DVD burning devices. Did you use the link kindly provided by onya?
I will use the HC encoder and post a log when i get a chance. After all is does take about 8 hours =)
