If I went out to a store (lets say best buy), and bought a new psp, would I still be able to downgrade to 1.5 and install a custom firmware? will I be able to play psp game "Backups"??
What firmware version would I get if I bought a new one right now?
I have GTA unpatched.

i would say you would get one downgradeable but you never know. if you get the entertainment pack it comes with a 2.71 ta-082 mobo.

There is a tutorial somewhere on afterdawn I'm sure that shows you how to tell what mobo and fw is on the PSP from a letter code on the barcode sticker. This way you can check before you buy. If I can find it I'll post back. Have a search yourself in the mean time.
Found this from Thandakid.I think there is a more comprehensive one on here somewhere.
if u want homebrew then u need 1.5 for that u need to buy frm a local retailer here is a guide u need the to check on the psp box on the side of the box

according to another site no psp's were released with a firmware higher than 3.03 as of mid febuary so your chances are possible as long as the store got the shipment a little while back

I live in the US, Arizona. I guess I'm gana buy a psp from bestbuy, and if its a downgradable firmware then I will keep, if not, then I will say it keeps freezing or something, and return it for money back.
i was hoping someone just bought a psp in April, the $169.99 one.

Here's a little more updated one.
no letter = 1.0 (Japanese Release) 1.5 (North-American release) confirmed
A = 1.5 confirmed
B = 1.51 confirmed
C = 1.52 confirmed
D = 1.52 confirmed
E = 1.52 confirmed
F = 2.0 confirmed
G = 2.01 confirmed
H = 2.50 confirmed
I = 2.60 confirmed
J = 2.70 unconfirmed
K = 2.71 confirmed
L = 2.81 confirmed
M = 3.01 confirmed
N = 3.03 unconfirmed
O = 3.10 unconfirmed
Oh and two days ago i saw a bunch at Zellers with the letter "I" on them...so there's probly still a good chance of getting one with downgradable firmware, just only the core pack had the letters on it.

Im getting kinda annoyed with everyone who complains about "NEWBS"
*COUGH COUGH*
*COUGH COUGH*
Quote:because I've had my psp since february and I've updated my firmware with every official release since then because I had no clue what advantages/disadvantages there were to using homebrew and custom firmware, actually I still don't see how custom firmware is any better and now I'm stuck with 3.30 and patiently waiting to see if DAX is as good as you guys say he is and comes out with a 3.30 downgrader. Just thought I would let you guys know
As soon as the current PSPs runs out the newer version PSPs will be shipped and it also means more noobs flooding this forum up.
