Both of my computers are Dells. I was just wondering if could take the installation CD shich came with my new PC, and use it to upgrade my laptop which is now running XP. Any help would be appreciated.
I am not sure if you are asking whether it is permitted by Microsoft or whether it is technically possible. If you have a custom Dell installation disk it may or may not "work" for a different computer from the one it came with, but if you ran two computers on one license you would be in breach of the EULA. You have to have a license/product key for each installation that is unique or you are not in compliance with the End-User Licensing agreement (EULA) that has come with every version of Windows other than volume/select licensing.. "You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices." I have a feeling that Product Activation would fail if you tried it, anyway. This is different from some versions of Microsoft Office which do allow you to install the software on more than one computer.
Yeah, as Indochine said, the activation code is the same, so no, that in theory would not work as planned and it would be very frustrating for you.
