Fair enough. Did you actually try the DRD firmware? You might also want to try the firmware updates for the GDR-8161B and GDR-8163B here: http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

Choose Drivers>DVD-ROM and then search for "816"

You will probably have to use the flash programs listed in the last post I made, because otherwise you will likely get a hardware mismatch error when trying to crossflash.

So, so far the latest firmware that anyone has posted for the 8160 is 0012. Anyone got anything higher? Would be nice to find out exactly what Wiible has and get a backup of it to post, then all the 8160s could be in business. I've sent him a PM. Hopefully we can make a backup of his firmware and then post it for everyone.

First off... bravo. Someone pointed out that you were wrong and you didn't blow up. I think that's the first time I've ever seen that on the internet! *boggles*

I pulled down firmware for the 61, 62, 63, 64 and tried to flash my 60 and it didn't work. It was the secondary master and was the only drive on the controller.

I haven't tried the DRD firmware because the drive uses a different PCB from a different manufacturer using a different chipset from a different manufacturer. As someone on the RPC1 forums posted... "It's a completely different drive."

Folks, the GDR-8160b will not work. You cannot flash any of the other GDR-**** firmware on the 8160, so do not waste your time. There are no revisions for the GDR-8160b firmware available. I googled, yahooed, checked www.driverguide.com, and I checked with both Hitachi and LG.I spent hours and hours testing three different 8160s on two different PCs. It does not work.

I was browsing Ebay and noticed that someone is claiming that the HP/LG GDR-H10N works. Can anyone confirm this.

I would avoid it. That seller is setting themselves up for negative feedback. Stick to the drives we know work. That's GDR-8161b, GDR-8162b, GDR-8163b, GDR-8164b. :)

Perhaps if someone has this model drive (LG GDR-H10N) maybe try and flash the 0B10 firmware to it and let us know if it works or not.
What do you have to lose.. at least your firmware will be updated if anything!!! :-)

Didn't work as in it would not flash or as in it did flash, but then did not function? Normally you need to force a crossflash, if it is not accepting the firmware then the next step is to find use the right program to force the flash.

I disagree. Unless Wiible's post was an outright lie - what would be his motive for that - his post appears fairly credible, is well written and he specifically mentions the 8160B twice, so it's highly unlikely that it's a typo:

The GDR-H10N, has also been reproted to work and then reconfirmed that it did work when asked. While not as well written, I see no reason to doubt this either:

So currently we have seven drives reported working, 8160B, 8161B, 8162B, 8163B, 8164B, H10N, and UJ-857E.

Now that does not mean that all 8160B drives are the same or will work. I'm sure there are different versions and different firmware and that is likely what is causing the problems for some and not others. However since several have had problems, it's not worth the risk until we figure out exactly what the issue is, how to fix it, or specifically which types of 8160B work. For now, it's been removed from the searches and is not recommended. But if you already have an 8160 or have access to one, try it out and get back to us!

GDR-8082N, is another model reported to work. Please post if you have tried one. What a rip-off this guy wants for them though! Don't buy one from him. I wouldn't offer more than $20.

I do not know if wiible was lying, but he did not bother to respond to me when I asked him for help. Are you suggesting that I am lying? I tested three 8160b's. They do not work.

Long time lurker, but just decided to sign up. So take my post FWIW.

I had been searching for an 816*b drive for a couple days and ran across Cheever Industries.

29 dollars for a "GRD-8161b", I'm hoping it's the same (or a typo) of the GDR-8161b. Cheever sells genuine replacement spare parts for IBM, COMPAQ, DELL, HP. So I'll post back with my results. It shows they only had 4 on hand before I put in my order this morning. So they have 3 left if there has been no other activity.

Although I've never heard of a GRD working, my guess is that it is probably the same drive and will work - the model number is probably slightly changed because it's a refurb; this is often done with refurbs.

A google for GRD-8161B turns up a lot of results so, it's probably not a typo.

Let us know if it works.

I sure will. It shipped today so I should have it in 4 to 6 days I suppose.

I did a Google search before buying it to see how relevant the model number was as well. It did bring up seven pages of matching items, but that is nothing compared to what a GDR search finds. It also says "Did you mean: gdr-8161b ", but of course it only says that because it is based off of what users search for and more users search for gdr.

Also, following most of the links from the GRD search, I have come to realize that it is mostly listed as IBM's LG drive.

I work for a software company, I'm a software engineer, and our PC supplier tried to find an LG 816 series drive for me today with no luck. He mentioned H-L Data only sells them to IBM, Dell, Compaq, etc. For use with their new systems. So it makes sense that IBM might have slightly different leading characters in the LG model number, I guess lol.

Just my two cents, I'll post my findings when I throw it in my pc.

I bought one of the H10Ns off Ebay and it does not work, my 8162 and 8163 both work.

As for the H10N according to other more inclusive/responses on another forum about it, it seems to be a firmware specific model that works. All the users reporting to work had the 0B10 firmware. No other firmware version has been reported to work.

Mine is a 0D04 and like others who reported non working we all had the same firmware... Just FYI and apparently they are working on a way to figure out how to reflash the nonworking firmwares to the 0B10 working ones but no success yet.

I have an HL-DT-ST GDR-8160B and I believe that it is able to read the Wii discs, but I am still unable to burn due to another problem. When I insert the discs, Rawdump does indicate that a wii disc has been detected. It does the same for gamecube discs. Shouldn't that mean that the drive can read the discs? My problem is when I try to dump. I get the dreaded "unhandled exception" error. My particular instance is due to some kind of "arithmetic" issue. I've gone over all of the board suggestions for how to fix this problem (change to PIO mode, safe mode, repair windows etc. etc.) with no luck.

For those of you guys that tried a GDR-8160B and it didn't work, do you get this far? Or does it shut you down at the start as if you don't even have a drive that can read the discs. I'm asking because I'm unsure of how to proceed. I'm thinking about trying an external USB enclosure and hooking my 8160B to my laptop.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Ah, so it's only the H10N with 0B10 firmware that work. Thanks for that info! I'll update the OP.

Great! What is your firmware version? Usually if the drive does not work, then you will get the following error right at the start: Error!! You might have a faulty Drive!!

I experienced the exact same unhandled exception error due to arithmetic on a known working 8164B after I used Windows Update to update to .net Framework 3.0. I recommend sticking with 2.0 ONLY. I believe this error also occurs when a disc is scratched and cannot be read.

How far into the dump do you get before getting this error?

Also, all four of my drives, 8161, 8162, 8163, and 8164 work just fine with Ultra DMA - never had to use PIO on any of them. I'm using XP PRO SP2 fully updated.
