I'm building a new computer and I have already purchased a Pioneer 112D for burning DVDs. Now from my experience in the past Dvd-burners usually don't get the job done as well as old fashioned dvd-rom drives do. I used to use a Samsung 616T drive that could copy anything, only problem is there out of production and I'm sure there's better out there by now. Anyone have any good recommendations, preferably off of newegg.com since that were I order like everything.

Make sure you get the drive that matches your connection. I use SATA for all my builds, mainly because you don't have those big flat cables. I haven't seen any speed advatage though. I get the OEM versions because I don't need anything but the drive. These drives are all installed and working in different PCs. Nothing spectacular about them. They read DVDs at a reasonable rate and don't cost very much. I know they will be reliable.
yeah i need to pickup a new drive also nero isn't recognizing my Lite-On "Burning on the Fly" for some reason must be shot
not long ago light-on dvd-rom's were the fastest rippers. I don't know for certain whether or not they are still king.
I dunno Burgers, So far I'm not having any problems. The cables are small so you get better airflow. They are more complicated to install if you have a bunch of other SATA stuff hooked up though. why be bother for dvd-rom,,when now dvd-rom and dvd- burner have same price..i refer sata drive for better airflow as fasfrank said..we use to buy dvd-rom before because it was much cheaper than dvd-writer but not any more....
A burner uses a different read strategy in most cases, (CLV vs CAV) so is usually slower. I don't know if that's true with all burners but it been my experience that it works that way.
I used to use a Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM to rip but have since switched to a Lite-On 16x burner instead. The burner rips slightly slower (maybe 10% - 20%) but since I prefer a burner for reading audio CDs it's no big deal. The decrease seems to be in how quickly it gets up to full speed, which would seem to match fasfrank's explanation.

I did a test on three of the drives installed in my PC. I'm surprised by the results. Movie is National Treasure. AnyDVD running, Shrink setup: PATA DVD-ROM- JLMS XJ-HD166S: PATA Burner- PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D SATA DVD-ROM- LITE-ON DVD SHD-16S1S Older PATA drives are faster than the new SATA DVD-ROM. The Pioneer burner beat the ROMs.
