If anyone can help I'd appreciate it! I am lost and am afraid I have to go buy a new cd burner. I have limited experience with this so good advice would be welcome! I recently installed Win XP Pro after my machine was having trouble with the original install of WinXP home edition. Everything is working fine now EXCEPT for my Pioneer DVD-RW drive...which was burning fine using Nero for over a year (with XP home edition). After the XP Pro install I reinstalled Nero and tried to make a backup disc of some docs...and an audio disc to test it out. Neither worked. I tried to update the driver but it says the device is working properly and there is no update. I tried contacting Pioneer service but they were useless and gave me a reply that had nothing to do with the problem. I tried burning stuff with the Windows programs and it doesn't work either. Thank you so much but it's still not working....so many wasted cds...groan. I did what you suggested...cleaned out the old Nero stuff, installed the new stuff and unfortunatley when I tried to update the firmware there was an error message...and then the drive didn't work at all! "Failed to move to the normal mode" was the error msg. Luckily I did a system restore right before I tried changing the firmware and have restored the drive to working condition BUT it still won't burn. Is there anything else I can do? Have you tried cutting back on the burning speed from 32x ? In Windows highlight the drive > Properties >Recording and set it back to 16X (applies only when burning with XP)
I just tried slowing it down to 16 and still not working...new error message though. Said its a communication error now. I can't understand why it doesn't work. It used to work fine with Win XP Home, Now with XP Pro its no good! It used to burn at 32X no prob. The setup is the same. Here is the log from Nero if anyone understands it. Thanks! Verify your drive model carefully before updating. Nero is not detecting your writer properly. Possibly related to the firmware.
Hey sorsha001, still having this problem? Well, I had the same problem today and I was looking for an answer, tried everything, with no sucess. Then I realized I had to do it by myself. Reading your post, it seems you did not change hardware, just the OS. Are you sure? I will repeat: ARE YOU SURE YOU DID NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE? Didn't you change a cable, for example? or maybe changed your SATA or IDE drives from one port to another... As I said, I had the same problem today. When everything fails, you must sit back and remember every detail from the beginning. Im my case, I changed my motherboard and the new one has 6 SATAII ports and one IDE. Nothing strange... all drivers installed... no complains... no conflicts... everything should work as expected right? WRONG! I don't know why, but the primary and secondary IDE controllers didn't enable Ultra DMA, and I couldn't enable it manually. Then I thought maybe changing the 2 HDs from one SATA port to another should help. Well it did! I pluged on SATAII port 0 and SATAII port 1 and didn't change anything on my DVD recorder, still jumped "master" and plugged on IDE. Windows enabled Ultra DMA for the IDE ports! A victory! Simulating another burn on Nero gave me the same results... DMA error. With nothing else in mind, I started looking inside my box and thinking: now Im FCKD. Then, something I remembered. I did change my IDE cable just after the upgrade. I plugged my old cable and voilá! everything works fine. The cable I was using was a very old cable still working fine but not capable for IDE ATA 133 transfers. It was a cable for IDE ATA 66/100. The cables even look different from each other. With this little story, what I wanted to say is that things like this are solved in the details. Something you changed and you never thought could be a problem... well, it is. attar said it could be firmware. Maybe it is, but maybe it can't detect your driver due to a faulty or wrong cable.
