Tried to create several DVD-R but get he infamous BLUE SCREEN when its abour 60-80% finished writing.

Have a Liteon DVD Burner (Sept 2003 release).

    Using XP PRO.

Any clues anyone how to fix this problem?

I've burnt several disks using Nero 6, and haven't had any problems. Have you installed the patch? I believe it is still available on the home page...If not, let me know and I will try and put it on my page. However, I was under the impression that the patch was for overburning problems...

I have dowloaded the latest Nero updates, about 22 meg or so, one would assume all was there -- nay?

My XP Pro is up-to-date as well.

I used CloneDVD (with DVDSHRINK) and the burn process completed -- but the DVD does not play in my XMS standalone DVD player, which is supposedly DVD-R compatible.

The backed-up DVD-R's play OK on my PC.

So i thought I'd try Nero -- but it just keeps crashing ... ??? Blue Screener!!!

Perhaps some other burn software then ... any suggestions ... ???

Sorry to hear that about your Nero. People seem to be having a very bad time with it, but no trouble here. Oh well, some people seem to like Record Now for dvd video authoring. I think a pretty good guide can be found here: http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/recordnowmax.htm

Also, are you using the DVD Video option in Nero and placing all of you files in the Video_TS folder?

    Thanks.

I'll checkout the link; and 'YES' to the question.

Changed from DMA on the IDE controller setting to PIO setting, uninstalled NERO 6 and used Intervideo DVDCopy and have had moderate success, with two DVD's working in my DVD XMS 750 player.

The DVDs did not have DVDshrink(ed) run on them first, but just used DVD Decrypter for the 'movie only' portion to be ripped.

I tried another DVD backup tonight with the menus etc intact and it would not run on the XMS standalone player, got audio only.

As i think i mentioned, the backups do run on the kids PS2.

Has any one had similiar problems? Any clues out there to what to try NEXT?

    What am i doing wrong?

    Thanks.

Sorry, I've never had a problem with using DVD Shrink and Nero. Wish I could help.

This is a complete shot in the dark, but blue screens in Windows (2K especially) are often trigged during large IDE transfers (like a DVD burn) because of incorrect or disabled DMA settings. Case in point, a friend was burning a DVD using Nero 6, and the buffer level was all over the place, not to mention that the burn took 45 minutes. It turned out that the controller's DMA setting was not enabled.

Check for yourself by going to the IDE controller settings (primary or secondary depending on how you hooked up your DVD-R drive) through Device Manager and making sure that DMA is enabled.

Hope that's what it is, but again, a shot in the dark.

Aside: Using DMA, your CPU transfers data from one IDE device to another a block at a time, allowing the memory subsystem to take care of transferring individual bytes, and freeing up the CPU to do other stuff. PIO Mode (the default on Win2k from what I've seen) requires the CPU to transfer bytes (words) of memory explicity.

    DMA she no workx!

With DMA enabled -- Nero either crashes my XP Pro, or hangs, or i get an error almost right near the end of a burn -- like 99% thru .. !!!!

PIO only enabled stopped the 'blue screen' crashes but i still get an error like 99% near the end of burn --- the @#$%$#@ !!!!

IntervideoDVD Copy is about the only small success i've had -- but with PIO enabled, the burn time seems to go forever!

    Maybe i should Format and re-Istall Xp ... ???

BTW --- anyone know Lite-on's tech support email ... ???

Never had a blue screen with nero 5.5. I read and keep my work and program files on a ide line separate from my burner. Some folks claim problems with everything on same ide line. I've also seen mention of problems if disk breaks 4.2 gig mark, not to mention problems clearing up using a different brand disk.

Well everything on the same IDE channel is always a mess. You can't have a simultaneous read and write on an IDE channel, so if your disk and burner are both on primary or secondary, you're asking for some horrid performance.

OK! That's a thought. By "disk" i assume you mean hard drive.

However, my DVD burner is 'master' on IDE 2 and the HD is on my IDE 1 as 'master'.

I have a DVD Rom on IDE 1 as a 'slave'.

As I mentioned, "Intervideo DVDcopy" has worked, but is inconsistent.

I noted on a Lite-on forum than another guy was not happy with the 411S liteon DVD burner also. Making coasters.

Maybe the drives are stuffed ... ???

Normally you should have the DVD/RW burner as Slave on the 2nd cable with the DVDROM as Master. That is also true for CD/RW burners. you have got them the other way round which is probably causing the problem. Plus you need the DMA enabled on both units and also it's better to have the IDE drives also DMA enabled. You might also check in system to see if the DMA controller is enabled or not and how it is set up.

And before I forget it, sorry. You should have your hard disks on the same cable, presumably ATA 133s using CS which makes the master the last on the cable. The DVD units go on the 2nd cable which is not ATA 133 normally and once again the DVDROM is master and the Burner DVD or CD is slave. Everything needs to have the DMA enabled.
check with the DVDRW manual and the motherboard manual to see the correct configuration. I'm pretty sure it is as I have outlined above. LOL

Not to argue, but it doesn't make a difference whether drives are configured as masters or slaves, or whether they're on the primary and secondary channel. These days, both channels have their own interrupt, their own IO ranges, and a DMA channel. As for the master, secondary debate, the only thing affected by that is what drive letter Windows assigns the drives, and frankly, who cares, it's just a letter.

The biggest performance and stability hit will come when the activity of reads and writes (read from HDD, write to DVD-R) occurs on the same channel, because each channel has only one interrupt. Because of this, you can't have an interrupt to read a block (assuming DMA) from HDD and write a block to DVD-R at the same time, it's either one or the other, and the reads and writes have to be interleaved. You can avoid this mess by having your source (HDD) and destination (DVD-R) on different IDE channels, i.e. one's on the primary, one's on the secondary.

You said you have two HDDs, so it makes sense to have those on different channels too. Assume your first HDD (H1) is on primary, and the second is on secondary (H2). If you intend to burn data from H1, put the DVD-R on secondary. If you intend to burn data from H2, put the DVD-R on primary.

For more info on interrupts, IDE controllers, channels, etc, look here:

yeah, i hear what you are saying about the Master and slave topic, and i have to say i believe what you are saying is true. However, manufacturers are still reommending to make put the burners on as master and the rom's on as slave. I have to say i would agree with that too. I ran into difficulty changing it around there just to test it. It wouldnt read my writer, so i swapped it back quickly before ballsing it up. But then i disconnected my other DVD ROm as i dont use it, but i left a DVD in the damn thinkg. Feckin Feck :-(

According to the Lite-on DVD burner manual, it recommends, and which is my config, the following:

    (B) Hard Disk connected as Master device and CD-ROM or DVD-ROM connected as
Slave on the Primary IDE port; nothing connected to the Secondary IDE port.

Set the DVD Writer’s jumper to MASTER, and connect the DVD Writer as Master
to the Secondary IDE port. (If you are looking for a way of “FAST COPY/On the
Fly Copy”, this setting will bring you with a best result of copying speed.)

firstly i have had some similar problems to you.
i find that nero automaticaly sets write speed for you..you should over ride this to burn at 1x.i get much better compatability at 1x..secondly you could try different media.i find different disks work better on different players depending on which writer they were burned in..at the moment im having the most success with bulkpaq yellow 4x..but burned at 1x as above..good luck

Re. the pros and cons of master versus slave. I'm quoting both the Asus motherboard manual and the Nero guide book to burning. Having only eight comps in the house all with CDRW burners, one with a DVD burner, I've had no problems with the suggested layout. As I also use two HDDs, with the motherboarsds that only support one cable for the ATA133 HDDs and one for the other Sccsi or Rom units, it seems to make sense to follow the motherboard manufacturer's reccomendations.
Theo nly time i get a coaster is when the burner needs cleaning or if a file is corrupted.
You guys can do whatever you wish to set up yr comps, of course. LOL
