I recently got the DIVX Pro 51 GAIN adware. I have some question for those of you who know.

Is this the same thing that the regular DIVX Pro is?

If you remove or disable the spyware that comes with it will it still work? I see it's a program called trickler, or something like that. If I stop that and get rid of it will it stop DIVX Pro from working?

What are the uses for all the controls in the DIVX Pro setup? There are mpeg tools, pre-processing source and others. If there is a guide or how to on how to better use this I'd appreciate the info.

    Thanks.

    Guide to remove adware- http://www.nanomessiah.com/divx-spyware.html

I recommend that you don't do this. Why? Because we are getting the opportunity to use this codec free of charge and one of the few ways DivXNetworks(DXN) can make money is by using adware and selling the pro codec. The more money they make the more resources they can make available to improve on future codecs they release. If more and more people disable the adware, DXN might have to start charging us for the use of their codec.
Of course this is all up to you :)

This guide will explain everything about the divx codec.

If you only want to use the codec to decode your movies then there is a free version available to download.

The adware stuff doesn't interfere with the encoding and give you ads when you watch something?

That's the main thing I'm interested in is that even with the ads you're not going to lose quality or be interfered with at a critical moment when encoding.

Thanks for the info, there are some nice looking conversion guides on that site.

No the ads don't interfere with your encoding nor does it prevent you from obtaining your desired quality. What matters is the bitrate youre using the quality of your source and the various filters you may or may not use as well as encoding method: multipass will always give much better results than 1-pass and is more accurate with filesize than 1 pass quality based.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks.

Id just really hate to see the day when the divx codec will no longer be free. I really like the codec, but I just dont see myself buying it.

You raise a very valid point (at least from the consumer's perspective) however I dont think DivX will go under for awhile yet considerng they still have tons of corporate contracts and such. Not a fan of XviD are ya? :p

I primarily encode anime and from the tests that ive done(not much really), I decided I liked the divx results better.
Maybe when a truly stable xvid release comes that I can see does a better job with my anime ill definitely look into trying it out on a more definitve scale. :)
