I have a compaq evo d500, i have upgraded the ram from 256mb to 640mb, i have upgraded the asus cd writer to dual layer cd writer,i have upgraded the graphics card to a 1gb one, and now i want to UPGRADE THE CPU, originally, THE CPU WAS 1.6ghz, i have taken it out,(socket 478), and bought a 3.0ghz one, is it ok if i replace it, or do i need extra cooling!!!
    Thanx,

You might get away with it depending on how good the system cooling is. I'd recommend being on the safe side by getting a better cooler, unless of course the 3Ghz version came with one, in which case use that.

One other thing, don't expect to get a reply within 10 minutes of posting a thread. Especially at the time of day you posted, not that many people are about on this forum to instantly help. Be patient.

another thing to consider on that new cpu is it compatible with your board. your 1.6ghz is most likely a northwood dye cpu & your board is highly unlikely to use a prescott dye cpu even when both are socket 478. ran into that on my old board as it would only accept northwood cpu's. check compaq site to see if can be upgraded or if there is a bios update for that upgrade.

How did you do that? You have SLi?

I would go with duel core by the way if you have Sli and are a gamer. But to answer your qestion, what are your current temps right now? My cpu runs about 125 degrees ferenheit to about 147. I have 7 fans in my system, including the cpu cooler, so I would probably go with an aftermarket cooler for your cpu, like zalman.

Waymon, i don't think there are any socket 478 boards with sli. 1gig on an agp especially if agp 4x which i think he has is unlikely.

As far as i know, 512MB is the highest I've seen for AGP 8x, and less for AGP 4x. No SLi of course, and also, no dual cores. Wow, now you think about it Socket 478 sucked!

Yeah true, it was more of a "compared to" statement anyway, but given that the socket was still in production quite recently, it shows what a leap we've made in such a short space of time.

Well aren't you an asset to the forums. I'm not even going to begin to point out all the flaws with that post, just pity your ignorance and leave you in the capable hands of the afterdawn moderators.

Why he went off on one at me? I honestly have no idea, it took me completely by surprise! It was presumably in response to this post:
