so i was handed a toshiba portege 3490ct from a friend and it currently has windows xp, but it has all of the crap from my friend and i want that cleared. the problem is, the laptop doesnt have a CD drive or floppy drive, just a USB port, which i wanna say might be helpful in something. anyways, i tried resetting to the first settings when it was new, but nothing changed. so i decided i want the hard drive cleared and i want to put linux on it.

    any ideas would help

ok you should follow this tut to install dsl on a flash drive

    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2006/09/20/all-in-one-usb-slaxzip

if you dont have a flash drive then you will need to get one or get a cd drive. after the drive is ready you can use it to format the drive. then you can use the computer by booting into slax. that should work untill you can get a cd drive then install a better distro
