Macrovision's SafeDisc version 3.1 launched and defeated?

    A while ago the Macrovision company announced a new version of their well known SafeDisc copy-protection, v3.1. This latest version promised to protect "against hacking and unauthorised copying of protected titles" by adding some unique new features to the copy-protection. A digital signature, for instance, should prevent any optical drive from copying a disc that is protected with SafeDisc v3.1. However,it seems that the protection can quite easily be beaten when the proper hardware is used:

    Vega$: Make It Big by Empire Interactive (Vegas MIB)
    Original UK - English
    SafeDisc 3.10.20

    ============================================
    "SAFEDISC" printed on the inner ring of the CD (where you normally see DADC for SecuROM)

    Bad Backup: game goes to Macrovision splashscreen and then asks for original CD.

    Bad sectors are present in the sector ranges.... 802-10228 (normal SafeDisc range) and also 308288 - 308295
    ============================================
    Alcohol 120%
    Read Speed Max
    Read Subchannel Data (thought it couldn't hurt)
    Ignore Read Errors

    I disabled skip error blocks to make the reader a little slower over the bad sectors.

    I then burnt the image at Max speed and disabled Bypass EFM error as the Plexwriter Premium can do them OK.

    The result is a working 1:1 copy. However it would seem that it is the bypass EFM error which causes the problem. I tried the same thing in my Laptop drive which requires the bypass setting and it didn't work. So it looks like SD3 can be copied but only with certain compatible hardware and the bypass feature no longer works.

    *Note* Test results by Dr. Evil

    Looks like my Memorex 52MAXX will easily defeat this new Safedisc 3.1 version ??
    Stay tunned..........

    Fifa 2004 is reported as Safedisc 2.9.x cd protected m8. If there is a patch update, then after applying use a tool called Safedisc Analyser (Google up) and locate the game exe on your hd and this tool will inform you if the protection has been updated.

    well this is strange: i scanned fifa 2004 cds with clony xxl, cd1-no protection, cd 2-safedisc2.9
    then i installed the game and scanned its .exe with the safedisc analyser who says it has safedisc v3.10.20. maybe results are not the same because my version of clony is quite old i think.

    My bad then m8. Can you take a snapshot (Safedisc Analyser)= load the game exe and send to m8? I'll pm you for further details. So the backup plays flawlessly in your dvd\cd-rom?
