hi i just built my computer the other day. im running a socket 939 mobo with an amd athlon 64 x2 3800 2ghz, 160gb maxtor hdd, and 1.5gb of pc3200 ram, and im running vista home premium. when i have the internet, msn, and media player open at the same time, my comp uses about 30% usage from each core so i no it can handle it. well after about 5 minutes the whole screen will freeze but it will show what i was looking at, in hundreds of different blocks all over the screen, its kind of hard to explain it but im not sure what is going on. i have not done any overclocking and im running at a solid 40-42 celcius on my cpu. and one other thing. when i start up my comp i get a "dns" error. it says" failed to load socket.ocx. please help thanks

Which motherboard do you use, and do you have a separate graphics card?
If you don't, how hot is the motherboard getting?

ya i did do a clean re-install when i put it together. and my motherboard is a biostar m-9 6100. im using the onboard graphics card which is a geforce 6100. im not sure how hot the board is getting but im pretty sure it is fine. and to add to the dns error, it actually says" failed to load socketxctl from socket.ocx. your version of socket.ocx may be outdated" im not sure how this happened, but it seemed to appear after i installed limewire, so i uninstalled it but i still get it. and im still having the freeze problem

you might have a bad stick of ram causing the screen to screw up as you have onboard video. try 1 stick of ram at a time to see what happens but performance will take a big hit because of vista.

That doesn't mean to say a) it's compatible with this board, and b) it still works now.

other possibility is the onboard video is overheating. does it have a fan on it? how many fans besides the psu & cpu fans does the computer have?

just 1 fan on the side. its on the side of the case blowing towards the cpu fan and heatsink. the only other spot i can put a fan is on the back under the psu

That's not going to be enough. You need at least one fan blowing out as well.

so, ur saying that i should have one on the back right under the psu as well? should i have it blowing in the case or out of the case. Also, if my ram is the problem i am having with freezing, that means i would have to buy another stick of the exact same brand right?

With the fan, yes, at the back, and blowing out not in. As for the RAM, it's not compulsary but highly recommended.

Braunerf1, I would say your on board graphics are overheating, I had the same happen to me with my x800xl ati card, forgot to plug my zalman fan back in after doing some work on the computer and the same thing happened. Scared the crap outta me, thought for sure i fried the card. (smell of hot plastic from inside your computer is usually a bad sign LOL)

    Good luck with it
    Peace all

Ok, I have just purchased 2gb of pc3200 ram of the internet, it is the same brand as the 1gb i currently have in my system now, the 512mb stick i have is a totally different brand which i am guessing is the problem. and for the fan at the back, when i line one up it is about 1mm away from the cpu fan and then i have a fan blowing right on the cpu from the side of the case, so it kind of seems a bit "crowded", if u think that this is still a good idea, then i will do it, and if so, should i purchase a 80mm or 120mm fan, either one will fit. thanks

Get a 120mm fan, they are much quieter.

I run 2 x 120mm fan one in the front for intake and one in the back for exhaust and also fun a thermaltake xp-90 with a 92mm fan on top for the cpu and a zalman VF900-CU for the video card.
    Everything stays cool and quiet.
    Peace all

ok i had to go right ahead and buy a new case because the one i used to have had no fan slot on the front, i now have an 80mm fan in the front, and a 120mm fan in the back, air flow is great, i will not no if my freeze problem is fixed until i get my ram, i will give an update in the next week or so, in the meantime thanks for all of your guys help.
