    hey everyone
ive got a problem when i boot with my ubuntu disk. its version 7.04 desktop. ive already got windows 2000 on it. its an old computer from windows 98 era. i had a problem like this when i tried to install windows 2000. its got 256 mb of ram, 533mhz amdk6 cpu, and a 40gig hdd. anyway, when i boot with the ubuntu disk in, i get this error message:
    couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
    NTDLR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

i know the disc isnt the problem, because the person i got them from has used them. thanks

EDIT: i just thought of something. could the problem be that both of my disk partitions are formatted to ntfs, and not the linux fat32?
    thanks again

    This is straight from Microsoft:
Error messages during boot Sequence on Intel x86 machines

    Couldn't open boot sector file
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\bootsect.dos

The BOOTSECT.DOS file is lost or damaged. The only way to restore this file is from a backup. This file contains information about the physical heads, tracks, and cylinders and partition table information; it is unique to each machine.

thanks for the help, but i dont know if thats it. i dont know if it makes a difference, but windows 2k runs fine without the disk in at bootup. when i take the disk out, and press enter, windows 2k runs.

    thanks.
ill peek around on the microsoft site, and see what i can find

It should run like a live cd at first and once your booted into ubuntu you have the option to install it on the hard disk.
