Install linux over linux

I have been dual booting ubuntu linux with xp and i wanted to install the new mandriva 2007 over the ubuntu. I was wondering if i just installed mandriva using the same partitions i used for ubuntu, would that cause any problems.

Or do I have to get rid of linux altogether and make new partitions.

 

So you want to install Mandriva on where Ubuntu currently is? If that's right just select the partition to install Mandriva to (which is where Ubuntu currently resides) and let it install. It should format the partition automatically even before it installs the files.

 

You will have problems.. most likely with xorg.conf and other user settings remaining on the partitions.

You need to actively blank the partitions with a tool like killdisk.. formatting them doesn't wipe drives, just the file table.

Try mandriva 2006.. 7 is broken

 

Damn, i wish i would have checked this earlier cuz i already installed the 2007 version.

Well anyway, i just deleted the partitions during the Mandriva setup and created new ones for it and it installed the bootloader over the old one and its workin fine.

 

That's good news guys.. I forgot all about if you make different sized partitions.

So they eventually fixed mandriva then? Last time I tried it (admittedly back in about march) it was broken very badly, or the update servers which it tried to contact during boot were down so that it plain refused to start.

I must have another go hearing that good news.. I have always liked the look of it.

 

Hey creaky do you know how to install the flash player plugin for firefox in Mandriva 2007 on a pc with x86_64 architecture? I've tried downloading from the Adobe website but every time i try to install it, it says it doesn't support x86_64 architecture. Is there any way to make it work?

 

I'm not sure but I think either Shockwave or Flash can't be installed on x86_64. I remember installing flash though as I couldn't install shockwave but that was when I was an idiot with Linux. It's been a while since I've used a 64bit edition of Linux.

 

I read in the ubuntu forums about running the 32 bit version in a chroot environment on 64 bit hardware.. I really don't know any more about it than that.. We wait for what creaky comes up with.
Otherwise.. shockwave players are really hit and miss.. work this out. I get no sound no matter what I do, but save the file and open in the same browser and there is no problem.????????????

edit:::: somebody suggested changing to half-duplex on places like youtube but it still doesn't work. It works with damn small on this hardware in the same configuration. Now I'm really stumped. :S
