I dont think I would even trust 1.6, not sure exactly what version I had on my PC but even when I dont have any torrents added to it at all its still says its uploading (and sometimes downloading) data. Even when I have active torrents the overall DL/UL (bottom right corner) is nearly always a few kb's higher than the individual torrents data rate added up. Which means its sending more data than it should, or that the global UL/DL is very inaccurate.
So Im switching back to Azureus as soon as I can be bothered.

Just checked and Im running 1.6.1

I have used utorrent for 2 - 3 years. Before that it was Azureus which at the time wasnt that good at all in comparison to utorrent. But if they sold their soles to the Mafia then i will go back. Even though they said 1.61 is ok which is what i have been using.

Ever since this acquisition by bittorrent i have not had much success with Utorrent it was giving me NAT errors all the time. Ever since this year and recently i have changed to bitcomet i have had no issues whatsoever. I did not even have to configure my router. Now thats wat i call a excellent program :)

The program is safe to use if you also have an ip blocker running also.

You can try peer guardian 2. You can find it on my profile page in on my software watch list.

That seems to be the safe bet with these things. Find a version that works, and stick to it.
