I have some MP3s that were encoded at 192k full stereo. The person who did this was kinda stupid because they are from a MONO source, so the left and right channels are the same.

Is there any way to just cut out one of the channels and make them mono mp3s? I know this wouldn't be possible if they were joint-stereo without reencoding, but they are full stereo.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is (even theoretically) possible because even in a full stereo file there are some things that are shared between channels (e.g. bit reservoir; bit distribution between channels is flexible etc.). AFAIK there is no program capable of doing this losslessly - you'd need to decompress and recompress to mono loosing quality. You might want to do a search on http://www.hydrogenaudio.org. There are some threads about this topic IIRC - and really knowledgable people.

Ok, thanks....good to see that that site is back!

I thought full stereo MP3s were basically the same as 2 mono mp3s stuck together! :)
