Looking to buy Replacement Nokia D-Box Tuners or Transistors, Advise Please...

Hello,

I have 2 Nokia boxes that need replacement tuners, even with a booster the signal is too weak and breaks up, I'm assuming that the tuner is worn out. I've tried eveything else (flashing different images, uCodes etc).

Now I know that you can buy replacement tuners here:

But they are a bit pricey at 55 Euro each plus delivery.

Now I've been watching this video about replacing the transistor in the tuner (which apparantly is the most common problem with them and the symptoms the guy describes are exactly those of my faulty boxes):

Can someone tell me where to buy the transistors being replaced in this video. Are they on this page:

Look for Spannungen Kabeltuner.
The transistor is the BFG94. The 10 ohm and 5.6 ohm resistor can be also faulty.

That place in the Uk want to charge £10 postage for a transistor to Ireland so I'll have to use someone else.

Also when you say "The 10 ohm and 5.6 ohm resistor can be also faulty." What parts are you referring to? Can you point them out here:

If you have to ask what a smd resistor is I guess your soldering skills are not so good.
Its not so easy to desolder and resolder all the parts.
By the way the two resistors are marked at the smaller picture.

I'm going to try to replace the transistors first and see if that does it. If not I can try something else.

They are very cheap so as long as I don't go soldering anything I shouldn't I should be fine. My brother is an electrician so should be able to help out.

Would sending an over amplified signal into a box or a surge in the cable be likely to damage this transistor by the way? I'm trying to work out what went wrong with the damaged boxes.

 

If you plug in the feed plug at a powered box you can produce an short circuit.
That can kill 1 or all 3 parts. Tell your brother to measure the 2 resitors first. If the BFG94 is damaged normally the 5.6 ohm resistor is also faulty. The 5.6 ohm resistor is the fuse for the BFG94 and the 10 ohm resistor the fuse for the parts behind. Sometimes the 5.6 ohm resistor blowing too slowly and the 2 parts behind are blowing too.

When you say "feed plug" do you mean the NTL cable from the wall, because I probably have been guilty of plugging this in to a powered box.

I have already ordered the transitors, could I pick up the resistors from Maplins (ie are they standard sizes)?

I'll get my brother to check the resistors for me first.

Still no joy finding them on the radionics website: a search for "5.6ohm resistor smd 0803" turns up over 3000 items.

0805 format.
smd 0805 10R and smd 0805 5R6.
You should get it in every TV repair shop.
That are simple electronic standard parts.

 

Hello again.

I'm just wondering how I remove the tuner from the DBox.

I've removed all the screws and taken the cover off but the silver tuner box is firmly attached to the board.

How do I remove it? Is there some kind of screw underneath holding it in place or something I can't see?

Afetr a bit of further ressearch, I know that you don't need to remove the tuner to replace the transistor but I cannot get the tuner cover to come all the way off. I have removed the tuner cover but it is catching on the cylindrical items on the board (see picture) and I dont want to bend them all the way over to allow me to remove the cover as they may snap off:



I had a look at the bottom of the board and the tuner does not seem to be screwed on, so how do I remove it? I've tried tugging it but it seems to be firmly attached.

Please advise on what to do next.

Ok with a bit of manourvering I managed to remove the cover.

The transistor is a lot smaller than I thought it would be, I think I'm going to need a finer tipped soldering iron.

Is there any chance you could find the "smd 0805 10R and smd 0805 5R6" parts in the Maplins website, I've had a look but there is just way too many parts:
