it will read cd's containing any format it won't recognize any dvd's, even store bought. no matter what i put in, it says "please insert disk".

i have been scouring the net for 3 days and was sent here told that "if afterdawn can't fix it, it can't be fixed."

i have uninstalled, i have tried different drivers, i have tried different decoders....nothing works.

i even downloaded a firmware update but the nec firmware flash utility says "target drive is not found".

this leaves me with a 14 mile long train of profanity as the only appropriate response.

please help me my brothers and sisters!
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Well if you are just talking about plain commercial dvd's and it will not play them, then I can only assume the laser is bad...

It is quite common for the dvd part of the laser to die, before the cd.....due to the excessive current consumption....

Can you hear the drive spin up with the dvd loaded, if you can't then that is a sure give away that the laser has not enough power to focus....

It could be just dirty and require a clean....

    How old is it?

Does it not even detect blank media?

I think it is shafted, but I am no expert.....

When the dvd is loaded, the laser tracks to the inner ring - focuses, then spins up.....

I think yours is not focusing......

If you are abit nimble you may want to try and open her up and have a tweak with the dvd power supply potentiometer........I have never done that on a PC Dvd so could not really advise you any further on how....sorry....

Maybe worth just giving it a clean first and see if that brings it back.......

this a new drive that has been in the machine for a few months but not used for anything dvd-related until now.

here is the update on this situation. as a last ditch effort i switched the data cables on the mother board thus moving the nd-1100a to the secondary/master slot and the lite-on cdwr to the secondary/slave slot, even though they are both jumpered to "cable select" (this is an asus a7v-266 with four ide slots). viola, it worked the drive began to identify all dvd media...until i rebooted. then it reverted to the same old problem of not seeing any dvd media. this has since corrected itself again but....

everytime i run dvd shrink it gives an error about 3/4 of the way through and quits. dvd decryptor won't comeplete a rip either. i forget the shrink error but it is something about "program error: something something".

what gives? can anybody figure out this riddle? are these two situations related?
