If anyone else has this burner, could you please give me some advice on which media to use to burn audio cd-r's? I've tried Sony, Fujifilm and Memorex with no luck. I've also tried switching burning software (Nero, RecordNow, etc.) and that didn't help.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

The trick isnt so much the media but rather the speed at which you are burning at. If you burn at breakneck 52x speed then your burns wont be so reliable :)

BTW, what are the ATIPs for the media you used?

CDRIdentifier allows you to read the ATIP on a blank cdr(w) (ATIP is essentially a code embedded into a CDR(W) that allows you to identify what company actually manufacturered the disc (as opposed to what company marketed it). For more info visit http://www.cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/cdridentifier.cfm or http://www.gum.de/cdrid/

    Praetor-

I've been attempting to burn 4x, 16x, and 40x all with no result. I should mention that the DVD+R function of the drive works perfectly, so I don't think the combo drive is wholly fried.

When I ran the ATIP software you suggested, I got the following on ALL of the CD-R's I tried (and 2 of the 3 cd-r's were not recognized as being present at all):

    ATIP: Information not available
    Disc Manufacturer: Unknown
    Reflective layer: Unknown
    Media type: Unknown
    Recording Speeds: Unknown
    nominal Capacity: Unknown

I should clarify that the burning process usually never even begins. I keep getting prompted to put in a blank disc, which it then spits back out at me. When it does accept a blank disc, it goes to simulate and promptly fails, ejects the disc and chuckles.

    Thanks for the help.

    Praetor-

I tried all three fixes...no luck.

Next, I tried a full reformat then the 3 fixes again...no luck.

The drive picks up DVD+R, DVD-RW, CD-RW and already burned CD-R, but not blank CD-R media.

I have tried 4 different CD-R media, 3 different burning programs and Miss Cleo's Psychic Hotline. No joy.

I'm on hold waiting for HP's customer service, but based on previous experience, I'm not hopeful.

Any other suggestions?? I'm at my wit's end.

    I appreciate your help.

    1. So you have ASPI correctly installed
    2. Check to see if the system is capable of reading the media (with InfoTools)

To determine your make and model of your optical drives; if you happen to have Nero Infotools installed, start it up and under the Drive tab, it will list all the relevant specifications and capabilities of your burner. The actual name of your burner is listed in the drop-down box at the top (those numbers before the name of your burner are important too!). You can get InfoTools from http://www.cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm

    I never doubted you...

Nero ASPI : ASPI is not installed

I have installed (& reinstalled) Nero ASPI: ezcddax6_neroaspi_2000XP but something must be funky.

HP's answer was for them to ship me a new drive. Hopefully we're narrowing in on a more reasonable answer here.

Is there a way I can delete ALL ASPI drivers and then lay down a fresh set of drivers?

    Regards,

Note that all your version numbers are not the same... this means your ASPI is NOT installed correctly. Use this ASPI here: http://cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm

Still not detecting blank CD-R Media. I am trying with (updated)RecordNow and Easy CD-DA Extractor.
CD-R Ident is still not giving any information on blank media.

ASPI installed correctly and working according to Nero InfoTool and ASPI Check:

I know you've installed the ASPI layer over and over again, but this is exactly what happened when I had APSI problems. I figured out what the problem was by using the built in burning feature in Windows XP because it uses it's own ASPI layer (winaspi32.dll). Try dragging some files to your burner in Windows Explorer. If it works, the ASPI layer is your problem.

I know what Nero InfoTools and ASPICheck are telling you. I am telling you if those are your ASPI values, your ASPI is NOT installed correctly. Period. Deal with that first and then deal with other issues (simply because ASPI is the easiest thing to fix)

Actually WindowsXP does not come with ANY ASPI layer of any kind whatsoever. The burning services provided by Windows are Mt.Ranider/DirectCD/InCD type services relying on a Windows Services called Image Mastering Applications Programming Interface (IMAPI). Doh! I should have known that since I've read about it before and knew that it was similar to DirectCD. Burning with any of those pieces of software is, however, still useful for finding out if the ASPI layer you've installed is the source of the problem, or at least can eliminate physical problems with the burner as the source.

rk3, I have the exact same problem with the exact same model of burner. I've been trying to find help for days on the net but no luck. I finally found this page. At least its good to know that other people share my nightmare. I have called HP but the best they can do is send me a new combo writer, not too bad if after all I can hopefully fix this problem through here and get 2 combo drive at the end.

Praetor, are you 100% sure that the cause of this problem is the ASPI driver? I'm gonna start walking through your steps and see. I'll let you know if that would work for me.. I doubt it cause it didn't work for rk3, but i'll try.

I have tried everything exactly as you put it and it doesn't work. RecordNow still says "please insert a blank disk in the tray". It does not recognize the media. I'm sure it's not an ASPI problem. First, I had no ASPI drivers installed and I had the problem, then I followed your steps, installed the ASPI driver and still got the same results. The funny thing about this is that in the beginning this drive was working perfectly, then all of the sudden, while I was burning a cd, a software called CDRWIN gave me a write error in the middle of the burning process and since then, never ever again I've been able to burn on this drive. I've been trying everything possible, even formatting the hard drive. I'm afraid the combo drive is defective and all I can hope is wait for a new drive that HP is gonna send me in a few days. I'd appreciate any other hints or help though. thanks.

In the end I replaced the drive (it arrived in 1 day, with return postage paid for the old drive - yes, you must return the faulty one) and have had no problems with any software since.

Best of luck! And thanks again Praetor.
