Is it possible/safe to hook up a hard drive into another computer via this method? I want to hook the IDE cable into the newer computer, and then power the hard drive via another computer? or if I try this will I create a loud bang, a puff of smoke, and two broken computers. Old computers are a pain in the ass.

I see no reason why it would not work. Its just a power connector.

both computers will have to be on to do that as it will work but why do that. another option is to get an old AT psu that you can turn off or on when you to.
