Well I'm glad you ask m8. The Plextor PX-708A is confirmed to backup Safedisc 2.9.x. I haven't seen any hardware reviews from CD-Freaks or CDR-Info on the latest LiteOn or Asus 8x dvd burners. Newegg has reasonable pricing for the Plextor PX-708A dvd-rom. Shoey

For burning protected CDs, the Plexy is the choice.... of course for burning DVDs, Pioneer is the way to go. Then of course, why would you buy a DVD burner just to do CDs? You are prolly better of buying an ASUS 522452A (cdburner) and a Pioneer -something- instead of the Plexy here. Dont get me wrong, the Plexy is nice but it seems kinda pointless to buy a DVD burner if the main requirement is that it can burn CDs.
How did you come to this conclusion m8? The "elite" cd burner for backing up cd protection is the Plextor Premium (52\32\52x) and so far the Plextor PX-708A is the only "qualified" 2 sheep burner until further testing with LiteOn and Asus dvd-drives. My opinion about Pioneer dvd drives for backing up pc\audio protection= sucks. Pioneer dvd drives are no match against Plextor dvd drives. [/b] Shoey
Yes you are right. But DVD burners are primarily for DVD burning. Not CD burning. Spending the extra money to get a device that can do CD burning really well - when its primary task is to burn DVDs is somewhat a waste of money. If you want a DVD burner... get a DVD burner. If you want a CD burner get a CD burner. Specialization. It works.

It works.[/bold] Praetor, the reason I'm asking is because I already have a CD burner, and it's 1 sheep. If I'm going to get another optical drive (not another CD burner, that's a waste of money), then I'd want one that can burn both DVDs AND CDs w/ 2 sheep ability. Of course, if it really came down to it and there aren't any good quality DVD/2 sheep CD burners, then I'd forgo the 2 sheep burn ability and just go for the highest quality DVD burner that I could get. But I want to see if I could get a decent burner that can do both, first.

I guess that works for me. Sounds like a good drive; I currently have a Plextor 40/12/40a and it's been good to me, so I'm inclined to believe that Plextor drives are among the very best. Ahhh so that's why Still though (i dont know prices since I havnt bought a drive in awhile), wouldnt it be cheaper to get something like an ASUS52252 and a PioneerA04/A05? Dunno, just a shot.
It's absolutly pointless to own a "2 sheep" dvd-burner and a cd burner. I agree if one owned a "1 sheep dvd burner" to search out a "2 sheep" burner". Counts sheep....(Zzzzzzzz) Shoey

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I think I'll stick with the Plextor, though. Even though it costs twice as much, it seems to be the better investment overall. I'm sure Plextor's firmware updates will continue to perfect their drive, just as it has for my current CD burner.
Can't go wrong with a purchase of the Plextor PX-708A for sure. About the only negative side for the Plextor PX-708A is the dvd rip speed but a LiteOn LTD 163\165\166 dvd-rom is the solution. Hopefully Plexy engineers will fix this with future firmware updates. I'll admit as far as just backing up pc\audio cd protection, these LiteOn dvd drives will give Plexy a run for the money because they are much cheaper in price! Shoey
But for someone who has a need to back up their PS1 games, is the Plextor 708A pretty good at reading/writing subchannels? I've got a lot of old PS1 games that I want to preserve, but my old Mitsumi 4804te can't seem to hack it. libcrypt protection has me coastering so many cdrs that I'd be better off buying backups online. I read and write at 1x on my old Mitsumi 4804te, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle libcrypt at all.
