Anyone know how to install a ethernet controller? Is it even possible without having the install CD?

I imagine it's PCI? Just put in the card.... if XP has the drivers for it, it will install the generic version when you get back to your desktop. Or, you can download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.

pull the card out & see what is printed on it like d-link, 3com or linksys.

Indeed. There may be some form of identification on it. If it's not the manufacturer of the card (such as D-Link, Belkin etc.) it might be the maker of the chipset (such as Realtek). if it is, you can get drivers from Realtek.

Sure. Keep us posted. If you can't find any suitable drivers, give us the serial numbers and we'll have a look. Don't post your MAC address though, for security reasons.

look for something like DFE-530TX near the top of the card as that is the model # of the card.
