My friend has a desktop PC that won't power on at all. I have inspected it and I see that the motherboard light is on, but when you press the power button, nothing powers on. Not even the fans move a slight bit. Only thing powered on is the mobo green light. Could it be only the power switch needs to be replaced? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
disconnect all data & power cables to drives. remove all cards & ram except for videocard & 1 stick of ram. reseat those 2. check all the silver topped can shaped objects on the motherboard which are capacitors that they are flat topped & not domed. try another psu.
If all that fails, it could well be the power switch. Find the connector where the power switch attaches to the motherboard (make damn sure you've got the right one!) and then remove it. Using something metal join the two pins that the switch was attached to. NEVER do this to any of the other pins on the board. If you're not confident you've got the power switch, don't do it.
Tried all the above and no avail! I think the mobo might've gone bad...but the green light still goes on. I guess that doesn't mean anything does it?
