I have another computer in my house that's in working order. Problem is, my dad doesn't want anyone using it because he says if he hooks the computer up to the internet they might trace it to our house because he got it from the office he works at, in this case, his office in the government building. My question is simply, is it possible to trace the computer, or are we good to go to use it? Thanks alot
I doubt it's traceable, but if you're concerned, wipe the hard disk by reformatting it and then reinstall windows. If it gets seized, it may still be traceable, but it can't be monitored over the internet.
the MAC address could be traced back; you'd have to swap out the motherboard and hard drive to be sure you'd have to problems due to that.
So, all i have to do is use a different network adaptor? Because we have a wireless network card available, and we have our own wireless router. Is this what your trying to tell me, because im still a noob in the computer game :] Thanks
Essentially, all they can trace once you've wiped the drive is the MAC address of the network adapter, as long as you don't use any of the same network adapters, it'll be fine.
Hi, Yes if its a government PC they have purchased a volume windows liscence and programs which can be traced by the likes of microsoft once you update. I would reinstall windows on a new drive, change the network adapter and add or remove some pci cards to give the system info stamp a different look. When government offices buy pcs they know exactly whats in it. Then I would sleep like a baby..........
