It really depends on which your drive writes better with. Try a google search for your drive model number. That's about an average price too. Also, I'm thinking it might be worth it to buy a full size DVD case for the Gamecube if you plan on making lots of copies. That will allow you to use the full size DVDs which are nearly free after rebate and coupon now. I don't plan on making more than 100 backups, so it's not really worth it for me.

No, the case mod does not require soldering. But you will need to install a mod chip for your GameCube to be able to read your burnt games. Mod chips require a few soldering points. Nevermind on my last post then if you are going to use a software mod. How much did you pay for the SD Launcher? The Mini DVDs are usually sold for Camcorders and Cameras because they more commonly use them, but they can be used in computers and consoles, just the same.
