im currently using backtrack 2 live cd with an atheros 5005g wifi card,
when i pick up wifi connections in kismet etc. the signal is poor even if im right ny the router.
this sometimes occurs in windows.... i have the correct drivers

does ne1 know of a way to boost the signal?
or why the connection is so poor?

fisrt check if card not defrcected
try change the chanel that your router transmites if your lucky and dont live Europe were everyone has like channel 14 om like 1 make go through not very used channels check if that is no interfice eg if routour is 2.4ghz and telphone is 2.4ghz and your router is or mostly your sensitivity od the wifi antenna is por try that whole host of problems and be try using some yhat antenna has a real sensitivity like real good and check for alumin that suff can cause bad echo for all wirelless signals or get like a directional antenna eg satellite and put a reciver at the end and just point

doing a bit of haxing eh? :D

You may just have a bit of a crummy connection in the card, have you tried getting an external antenna for it? Usually atheros chipset cards have antenna ports for you to attach one to.
