Brand New PC Blew Up Before I Even Got To On It!

Ill keep this simple. I brought a new PC, pulled it out the box and got it ready to turn on. I plugged one end of the power wire into the PC and switched the black on/off switch to on, and then as soon as I put the other end into the socket, I heard a small bang, sounded like a electric spark, and the computer didnt turn on. I then checked the little red voltage switch at the back and it was on 240V which is correct for where I live (UK). So i was just wondering what could have made it blow??

Probably a faulty power unit. Pre-built PCs always use really low quality power supplies. What make is the PC?

 

If you open the door up and smell smoke inside, then yes, it blew up. Send it back for a replacement.

 

I think that's a given Waymon, the electric pop is all I needed to know.

 

OK I have sent it back for a replacement, and the make I have no idea because they are refurbished computers so there is no make written on the case. Anyway hopefully the replacement wont do the same thing.
Also could it be caused by alot of things using power from the same socket, because I have a extention lead which with a TV, PS2, Printer running from it, but then my laptop works fine using power from here so I dont think its that...

Well, it wouldn't cause the power supply to make that noise, but it could cause the fuse to blow in the mains perhaps. If everything else works in the socket though, it's definitely the fault of the PC.
