i use my external hard drive with the normal cable and it works, however when i use a 9ft cable i got off ebay it is really slow. it said it was 2.0 so i dont understand why it doesnt work. like when i use it and try to open my computer, the window freezes and i have to turn off the drive so i can use my computer.

The maximum length for high speed data transmission over USB is 6ft. The maximum speed for any USB device is about 9ft, so it'll be really slow if you've got a 9ft cable. USB cables just can't be that long.

a 6ft cable might work, but I usually don't use cables any longer than 4ft for external hard drives.

damm, ok here is why i would like a longer usb cable. im using it for my laptop. im getting a 7 port usb hub, then putting all my usb devices in there. then use the extension from the hub to the laptop. will that work when i get the hub. use the 2ft to the hub. then a 9 ft to the laptop?

or will i need a 2ft to hub, then a 2ft to the laptop? hopefully not cause that would really limit my mobility?

    thanks for the response

If it works, it'll be the slowest hard drive known to man. 4 port USB hubs slow down devices, 7 port ones are even worse, that's a total of 11ft of cable length as well.

well this kinda sucks, what should i do then. i basically just need 6ft from the hub, so i can use it at one end of the bed to the other, im a student in residence. dont need to move around anymore than that. what can i do to get from the foot of my bed, where my hub will be, to my laptop which i would like to have at the head of my bed. thats all i want haha. any way around this?

All I can suggest is don't put the devices that don't need long cables in the hub.

hey all. my usb hub showed up today. i got it from hong kong off ebay. i tried the drive with 2ft to the hub then 2ft to the computer. everything works fine.

i then decide to try the 2ft to the hub then a 9ft to my computer and it works too :) so i am happy now. i can actually use my computer with some range now.

thanks everyone for the help. hope this helps others
