I know this sounds bloody stupid but I am new to burners. I have a 8x4x32 cdrw and tried to install a game my son recorded (burned) on a 48x disc. I got lotsa trouble with computer locking up and assume my cdrw will not read a 48x disk. Am I right?
That is a possibilitiy although I dont think that is the case... in fact I highly doubt that. Odds are the burn was not done properly. To determine your make and model of your optical drives; if you happen to have Nero Infotools installed, start it up and under the Drive tab, it will list all the relevant specifications and capabilities of your burner. The actual name of your burner is listed in the drop-down box at the top (those numbers before the name of your burner are important too!). You can get InfoTools from http://www.cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm
Thanks for the response. Nero analysis merely says Read Speed..32x, write speed 4x, buffer size..2mb, firmware version..5FW. Tried my son's original disk and same problem. Trying to get updated firmware from Acer (Benq) but can't find out which one to get as 5FW not listed. Awaiting Benq response. Best..Bob Blewett
What is the pc game title? It's "possible" that the game has some type of cd protection on it. DirectX 9.0 installed? Video card graphic drivers updated? Your CPU meet system requirements for the pc game? Under United States law, we the people are entitled to 1 backup of any software we purchase, or legally own. If the cd has some type of cd protection on it, we are entitled to use any software to make a legal backup. Shoey
OK guys this is my last go..If my CDRW is 8x4x32 then it reads at 32x right? If a disk is burned to be read a 48x can my poor CDRW read it? Does it just read it a bit slowly and what does it mean to read "slowly" luv bob
32x= Max CD-Rom speed. 8x= Max burn speed to a CD-R 4x Max burn speed to a CD-RW 99.9% of the time, yes your cd burner can as your 32x cd burner reads the burned 48x burned "data" at 32x, mine would read at 48x(no biggie). Your son just didn't know that the pc game you're trying to backup is Safedisc cd protected. When "we" say to read slow , "we" are referring to reading(dump the image or extract) the pc game you're backing up(preferably 16\24x). In your case you would Alcohol 120% and choose the Safedisc 2 datatype profile to read (dump or extract) the image of Hoyle pc game to your hard drive, then use the Safedisc 2 datatype profile and burn RAW-DAO and burn at 8x. . You then go to options and enable "ignore media type (emulation) and minimize Alcohol 120% to system tray (startup) insert your backup in your cd-burner, not your dvd\cd-rom. Okie just some clarification on stuffos: -Like Shoey says, 8x the the speed at which the burner can write at. This means that, provided thge media is 8x or better you can burn at 8x. If you put 48x media in, it doesnt mean you burn at 48x -- you still burn at 8x. There are some exceptions to this rule of course -4x is the rewriting speed -- exactly the same ideas the 8x write speed but here there are no exceptions -32x. This number is the maximum possible speed at which you can copy data from the CD to your harddrive. It has absolutely nothing to do with the rating on the CD. That rating (i.e., 48x is for CD *BURNING*, not CD *READING*. So if you but a 2x disc in there or you but a 32x disc or a 52x disc, you will still be limited to being able to copy data from the CD at 32x. Again, like Shoey has said, the problem is not with the disc nor the drive per se but rather with the inital burn process, that is, your son's copying technique failed to account for the anti-copying schemes present in the software/disc.
Well there you go ..thanks guys for all the help..I will get my son to try his burned disk on his comp and see what happens. Seems odd though that we tried the original disk on my cdrw and it also "locked up". This is the best help site I have ever been on. All best from OZ Bob
