If you purchase your own satellite receiver and all the necessary connections, is there a way to receive the signal without subscribing to Direct TV or any of the other companies?

Not anymore. There used to be certain cards that could be programed to do it, but the sat people figured it out. Now, when you try to use one of those cards, the sat people sends out a signal that fries the card. I've not heard of anyone trying that anymore, for a long time now. It got way too expensive for them.............It's cheaper to subscribe to the service.

actually, it does still work for two of the big three service providers, however it is not near as reliable as it used to be. Most user of the old *plastic* have now switched to FTA.
