Hello all. I purchased a new HP Compaq Presario C500 Notebook in September. It came with Windows Vista pre-installed. It's working great, but I'm having trouble with my DVD-Rom. When I put DVDs in to watch them... most work great and play fine.. but some will start spinning like it's trying to read this disc, but it won't read/load. Instead it continues to spin and sping and never stops. Pressing the eject button does nothing. I have to shut down and eject it right as it loads the Compaq screen. If I don't remove the disc then, it just turns to a black screen and Windows won't load until the disc is removed. I thought maybe the disc was dirty, so I cleaned them. It didn't help. Well, I bought a new DVD the other day, and the first time it had been played was in my Notebook.. but it also started spinning and kept spinning and would not load.

Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this problem?

Where would I find the error log for my DVD-Rom drive? As for Nero, I don't have it on this Notebook, but I don't think Nero will make the rom stop spinning.

Sorry I was working on another reply and posted here by mistake.

You could turn off the auto run for the drive.
The PC keeps trying to read the DVD and locks up the system.

Actually, I already have the auto play setting turned off, so nothing pops ups when I put any disc in. But whenever I open up the DVD player to watch the movie is when it spins outta control, LOL. I was talking with a friend last night about it and she says hers does the same thing on certain DVDs she trys to watch. She has a Dell, so I know it's not just with HPs now.

Yeah, I know about the players that some DVDs try to install and open, but I don't think that's the case here. As the latest DVDs I bought new was a series boxset. Disc 1 and 2 play fine, but then disc 3, 4 and 5 just keep spinning and won't load. They do however play perfectly fine on my desktop.

I contacted HP for help and they gave me a link for a tool to download that would "check" to see if my DVD drive was working right. But it sure didn't do what it was suppose too, LOL. It popped up about 5 errors, then my Windows Media Player and Windows Mail both stopped working. I got so mad I did a full system restore! luckily I backed up all my important files. I haven't had the chance to see if the drive will work now. I will try as soon as I get the chance and will report back.
