I just reformatted my computer and did a clean install of windows XP SP2. I've loaded all my drivers and software. Whenever I log into windows I get the error that windows cannot find c:\windows\config\lsass.exe. I deleted restore points, updated AV, restarted in safe mode and did a full system scan and found nothing. I know this is not the proper location for this file, and in addition, I'm booting off the E: drive! Not C:! So the machine should definintly not be trying to load something on the C drive. I dont know if this is spyware or not, do you guys have any suggestions? I can post a hijackthis when i get home today if that would help. I appreciate it guys.

Yes, a hijackthis would be useful, at least in determining weather it's spyware... When you say that you get an error, is it a windows dialog box (what does it say in the title bar of the popup)? Cause it might be an application that's trying to access lsass.exe, not windows itself.

When i get home I'll alt-printscreen it, but yeah it is a windows dialogue box - I just dont know what the title bar says. I'll hijack it when i get home and post it so you guys can take a look at it. If its spyware I'll be shocked since I formatted my computer and it appeared right away. I guess I couldve gotten a corrupt install disc of windows that had some spyware slipstreamed into it, but that doesnt seem likely.

I was able to solve the problem using Hijackthis - I deleted the line that contained that path to it and now everything seems to be workin perfectly. I'll post the log just to show in case anyone else is having this problem. THe line colored in red is the one I removed. Thanks!

Yeah, it just looks like windows was trying to run lsass.exe from system.ini -- this sometimes happens if your root drive isn't C:\

well either that or I caught the virus but it didnt work because its designed to attack OS's installed on the c: drive - lot of gov security guys wont let an OS be on a C drive for that reason.

Actually, what you had (from my understanding) was a Generic6.MUW Trojan and for all general purposes you have now disabled it. "Cut the head off the snake" so to speak. I would, however, recommend deleting the file that caused this problem in the first place. That is, if u haven't already done so.

Cudos for taking the initiative to solve this one on your own.
