i got this laptop, running XP and it use to run fine. but recently its been taking forever to load up, atleast 5-10 just to get it to the normal screen, as in wallpaper, desktop icons, and such all loaded. it use to be a lot faster and stuff, but it has slowed down. so im thinking that either i should get more ram, or that theres to many processes starting up in the boot and takes a longer time to load up or something. so pretty much, i just want to know if theres a way to speed up the loading time of starting the laptop.
Try disabling all of the startup programs that you have in your systray. If you see an icon , outside of the clock, network, speaker, and virus detector, disable them.
I would go to "Start", "Run", then type "msconfig", then go to the "startup" tab, and then either deselect all of the programs you don't want to open at startup, or select "disable all" and then go back and enable the programs you want to run at startup. The icons by the clock work too, but sometimes that doesn't get all of the smaller programs that run in the background, such as "Microsoft Office Helper" or something similar to that. "Disable all" stops of all programs starting up except for the ones needed for windows.
thanks, there are stuff that im not sure what it is. does anybody know what hpztsb04,hphmon03,regvga,dumprep 0 -k, and so on. the ones that i know need to be on, so i ended up checking nothing. lol
Those are the ones that you disable via msconfig, and msconfig is what I meant when I was talking about disable.
Oh I thought you mean going over to the icons by the clock and then changing the setting to "do not run program at startup". But either way, it looks like he's got it now. Normally I wouldn't tell anybody this with any other procedure. But I can pretty much do disable all and it doesn't effect anything. So I would think you could disable pretty much any program that you don't know what it is. The only thing I have ever seen it when you disable everything and reboot, is take away the Windows XP theme back to classic. I don't have a clue why it does this, but I usually just fool around with it until I find which program it is that causes that. But other than that, I have never seen anything go wrong with a PC because you disabled a program at startup.
thanks, i got it to go alittle faster. sorry if this is alittle off topic, but its a quick questions. sometimes when i press alt f4, to go to the window where it says shut down, hibernation, stand by, ect., the system tray bar on the bottom disappears. is there any way to fix this little bug?
You know XP bogs down after a while. I would suggest you format and re-install to make it run back up to speed. Hopefully you made a different partition for your data, if not backup!
Always look at the two faces of a PC Hardware & Software If it's hardware it way be a failed stick of ram. I find XP runs best with 512MBs or higher. Check under Computer property what your system is reading or download this freeware http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/CPU-Z/cpuz.html and it will tell you about your system. If it's software it might just be spyware or virus. This is all free and what i have installed to keep my system clean and "un-bogged down" "CCleaner" to empty all unnecessary files first. Anti-Spyware: Ad-Aware SE Personal, EMCO Malware Destroyer, Spybot - Search & Destroy, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, Spyware Terminator, SpywareBlaster, ANTIVIRUS: AVG 7.5 ALL FOUND HERE FOR THE MOST PART OR GOOGLE IT : http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/security/fwantispy.html Be sure to have only one antivirus program installed on PC however you can have multiple antispywares.
