my ati x1550 is pci-e x16, and the slot is the second one from the top. what is more ideal, having a slot card cooler on the bottom or on the top of the graphics card?

A far better solution would be to upgrade the cooler on your X1550. But if you must, I'd say underneath.

any suggestions for a fan/heatsink upgrade? i was looking at the arctic cooling accelero s2, but it looks kinda big and will block one of the pci slots.

and the slot card cooler is going to be added, regardless of the upgrade. just needed to know the best location for one.

If you get an Arctic cooler, you'll have no need for the Slot cooler. Buy one if you must, but it'll make almost no difference to your temperatures, the things are either incredibly noisy, or useless. Sometimes both.

sam is right mostly usless unless you have severe heat problems. i would suggest checking your case cooling and how youhave those fans setup. good flow thru the case should keep that card cool enough..... unless you are oc'ing it. if you must have it try the highest slot as heat rises and that is where it did the most for an old case I had.

my case isn't an aftermarket one; it's a dark grey gateway gt5458e system (bought NIB for only 200 :p ). better looking than the beige compaq presario 5000. it only has the 80mm fan and cpu fan. temps have been below or at stock speedfan specs.

i'm just trying to keep the insides as cool as possible, because i'm going to upgrade the x1550 when green friday (not black friday anymore) comes.

case upgrading isn't really important now, since the comp isn't built from scratch. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. just going to try to max out the comp, without oc'ing anything, before i decide to build one from scratch.

stepping up from a pIII with 512mb and win2k to an amd 64 x2 dual-core with 2gigs and vista is a big jump. multitasking is done without any stress on the system.
