what allows a tv to be classified as HD? does it just need to have a hdmi hook up? i notice that alot of the crappy brand HD tv's are crappyer looking than my normal crappy tv so why are they or how are they considered HD?

A progressive display with a resolution of anything over 480i. Also the tv's you saw were probable displaying SD content which most HDTV's have trouble with compaired to their old crt counterparts.
